This song helped me get thru 3 tours in Iraq while my wife was worrying about me. Now it's my turn, she's gone to the middle east and this song is helping her. Can't wait to hold her again!!!

It's a perfect song to explain the scary dreams to your child. It worked for me, and my son is only 4. He wakes up terrified sometimes, I paraphrase the lyrics of this song to him and he seems to calm down and believes i'll be there to protect him. He always seems to relate to this song, that's why i think this song was written on the basis of how he explained the fear and design of dreams to his kids.

baddog! i loved your blog, but next time add lines and spaces, it keeps the reader reading. I will say this, I'm sorry for calling k-pak an idiot, i was out of line by abusing his vision on something he truly believed in. Even though he was wrong on who wrote the song, i understand where he's coming from. What k-pak needs to understand is that every cover song isn't what the listener wants to hear, it's what's the listener needs to hear from that artists. Two different versions by two different artists. If we were to break down cover songs, would he say Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams" is better than the Eurythmics, I sure hope not! Two totally different meanings. Let's try to give credit where credit is do, as did Manson did for the Eurthymics.

Maybe ppl cover songs because it speaks what they want to write. Maybe they admire the band, or maybe it was a bet. Who really cares! It's an awesome cover, probably the best cover i've ever heard. What i will say about the meaning is something i stand firmly on! Skynyrd had a meaning to this song in which only they will understand, and chino will have a meaning to this song in which the deftones will only understand. Musical lyrics aren't always meant for the listener to understand, lets be courteous to both versions and allow both bands to have their own meanings. It's one thing to write a song, it's another to sing it! No one will ever say that J-Cash did a better version of "Hurt" than NIN, only because Trent had a different meaning than J-Cash did. Trent was meant to write it as J-Cash was meant to sing it. Two totally different eras.

For ppl to compare which song was better (NIN vs. J-Cash) is a complete waste of time. PPL can bash one or the other, who really cares what ones opinion really means, as long as it's only an opinion. I feel that each song has their own meaning. It's not up to NIN fans to degrade J-Cash version or J-Cash fans to degrade NIN version. What really matters is the message Trent and Johnny were trying to get across, which were totally different. I think everyone needs to stop being hypocrites and start opening your minds to something different instead of your own bullshit.

k-pak! your an IDIOT!!! This song was written by NIN, J-Cash covered it. Before you start posting why don't you get your facts straight and stop feeding ppl lies. I love both versions, i feel they both have different meanings. Who cares if it's about drugs, love, life, or death. Music has different meanings for everyone. It's up to the listener to come up w/their own meaning, for it's part of being human to have emotional things effect us.

Disregard what i previously wrote, for after listening to it more and more, I feel that instead of going to prison instead of war is incorrect. It is about a married couple whom are parted due to a war, the man is captured and imprisoned by the enemy. This interpretation seems much more plausible, for many wives of POW's felt their husbands were alive for many many years after they were captured and never gave up hope. How they wished they were together again.

I guess i hear this song almost differently than anyone else. That's Pink Floyd for ya, everything is so mysterious. I see it as a married couple or lovers hence "the smile from a veil" that share a common bond but are split during a war of some sort, maybe during the draft, go to war or prison. While the one enjoys the fruits of life, the other disagrees w/the war and rather be in prison. The views of the lifestyle from one side compared to the views of a lifestyle in prison..examples are pretty much the whole song. She misses him dearly and wishes he was there. For year after year w/o each other they feel that they're two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. The wold is just to big for them to be apart. I hope nobody tears my vision up, for this is my interpretation and doesn't skew anyone else's vision.

It has nothing to do with money, it's very simple. This song tells of the trials and tribulations of fate, whether it's you do everything for your country and you get no respect to eating hand to mouth on the local street, there is always harsher times than what you think you are going through. We need to help or pray for everyone who is in conditions worse than we are, for we would never want to be in those situations. GOD just deals a weird hand for us to play, let's not let him down. After all, he gave us these minds to use, why misuse them to better the gift he gave us.
