Filter – Hey Man, Nice Shot Lyrics 13 years ago
Also an important note, after Dwyer was convicted, this happened:

"William Smith, the man whose testimony led to the conviction of Dwyer, stated that he had lied under oath in order to get a better sentencing for himself, thus revealing the accusations against Dwyer to be false"

Essentially, after conviction and death, the man who caused all this recanted, out of court. His recanting is on film in the movie "Honest Man: The Life of R. Budd Dwyer"

VNV Nation – Airships Lyrics 16 years ago
i forgot to mention - this is minor, but seems appropriate; the bands thorough use of Art Deco motifs (such as their logos), suggests they are big fans and well educated on the Art Deco era.

VNV Nation – Airships Lyrics 16 years ago
love this song, and I honestly think this song could easily be 100% literal AND maybe have a subtle undertone.

Variously, i think both work because Ronan is a well versed, well read song writer, and an expert at vague shadowing in lyrics.

Literal works well here; the airship (zepplin/blimp, as we call them today) was a major source of national pride when they were in their heyday. people thought them wonderful, silent, smooth sailing machines - a sign of their (in the nationalistic 'we') technological advancement, national pride, national wealth, ingenuity, etc. it sealed a nation's place in the world.

i think the singing may perform a little anthropomorphism to the airship - literally a swell of pride & awe at the actual machine, not the riders. (this was a common song attribute in nationalistic music, especially war era songs.)

historical context - i think this literally is a play on the german airship era. germany was coming out of a economic depression and stumbling through wars at the time of the airship, and were unquestionably the leaders of the airship movement. the above described national pride was a huge thing, the airship was literally a national celebration of achievement and lit - the way the apollo moon landings did for americans - a nation's mind with wonders and dreams about the future, to germany, as a people & nation, the airship opened a new future. the airship not only was a new means of travel, but a faster means of travel, particularly for transatlantic travel - than the then-standard passenger ship crossings; this economization of travel, the art-deco association (the airship happend to compliment the popular decorative art of the time; art deco), it was a perfect storm of appeal.

KMFDM – Bitches Lyrics 16 years ago
another installment in kmfdm's self-deprecating, tongue in cheek fun? very similar to their past tracks, "Sucks" and "Intro" to me.

KMFDM – Adios Lyrics 16 years ago
there was a major catalyst and probably meaning for this song & album (the breakup);

the original (printed) lyrics might have been to throw off Gunther Schulz & En Esche from the scent. KMFDM's breakup, aside outside pressures, was mostly due to contract obligations to do with lineup - gunther and en esche were angry with sascha - and he had controlling rights to all things kmfdm. they split - acrimoniously - and this is highly in evidence by the fact many Adios and preceding album staff have worked on the albums after Adios; but never schulz or en esche, who went off to form the band Slick Idiot immediately after this.

en esche was the major catalyst of the breakdown, and is in evidence - having a much reduced involvement in this album's production. schulz was also reduced during production - while tim skold, bill rieflin, and cheryl wilson were in usual force, and have since worked on albums like attak and hau ruck.

this is a fuzzy recall of the explanation i had read at the time this album was released, at least.

KMFDM – Every Day's A Good Day Lyrics 16 years ago
kmfdm's rife with double meanings, and i think this song is a great plain 'anyone can relate' revenge track, but there's a very transparent second meaning to it - to me at least.

when kmfdm initially split (the "Adios" album) some members left to form a band named "Slick Idiot" and the split was acrimonious to say the least. i think the subtle reference to the personal meaning of this song is made plain by the repeating 'idiot' during the outro, and Slick Idiot's riding 'such and such of kmfdm!' to gain an audience.

but, i'm just guessin'

The Tiny – Everything Is Free Lyrics 17 years ago
"I can just stay at home
and sing this little love song
for the love in myself
If there's something that you wanna hear
you can sing it yourself"

while the rest of the song is somewhat vague, these lyrics give away the direct meaning in this song; it is entirely against pirated/unpaid copies of music (download, bootleg, etc.)

it's smaller scale artists like The Tiny that get hit the hardest by it, after all.

Fear Before – High As A Horse Lyrics 19 years ago
basic rundown, this is about the APA & IPA's allowance("blind eye") of psychological drug producers to market their drugs to the population in general, through mass media. this has desensitized us to the former taboo of being on drugs like prozac, ritalin, et.al. and made it socially acceptable, if not nearly desirable.

Fear Before – Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party Lyrics 19 years ago
Interestingly Enough, the title of the song is the give away to the meaning.

It's a bit of an abstract run down on the greek story of Cassandra, who was given the gift of prophecy by apollo (because of her great beauty) but was then cursed to never be believed when she refused to return his affections.

modernly, it's nicknamed the 'cassandra syndrome'
