This one's easy. We don't have to guess at the meaning. The band explains the meaning on its website: "The EP will feature eight songs, broken into four 2-song couplets. The EP is loosely based on Ecclesiastes, and tells the story of a young man's journey to true manhood. The tracks follow a young man who thinks he has everything in life, loses it all, despairs over the loss, tries to find meaning where it cannot be found, despairs that no meaning exists - and then finds the only true meaning in life. Track 2 is entitled "Unresolved." For music buffs, the title refers both to the lyrics and music, with the song intentionally not resolving to the root note of either key. (Yes, there is a subtle mid-song key change.) Unlike some of the songs that follow, the lyrics for Unresolved are simple and direct. Unresolved tells a story that is all too common and all too painful: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in like. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy finds all his worth and meaning in girl. Girl dumps boy for another guy. Boy is crushed. The end." The band also tells everybody that the band name comes from the lyrics to this song. There are a lot of subtle things going on in the lyrics. The song starts in spring, moves through summer, and ends when summer ends. The boy goes from a crush to love to falling hard to destroyed. "do you like me too?" "crushing hard on you" "can't get enough of you" "to you I will be true" "my special love" "my one great love" "my forever love" "alone" The girl goes from gazing at the boy to seeing herself in his eyes to love back to gazing to being gone. The sudden change from "two hearts beat as one" to just a gaze is one of life's most terrible feelings. The lyrics show an innocence in the love. The innocence seems intentionally disjointed from the crushed heart that results. Shy glances. The friend connection. Holding hands. Amusement park. Volleyball. Walking the dog. July 4th. Capture the flag. Smores. Late night talks. Then total emotional destruction. "alone in your embrace." The closing line is like a book suddenly ending on the next-to-last page. He's alone but still with her, sort of. They are physically close but emotionally separate. There HAS to be something more. The music also suggests that. Notice what the band site says about the music "intentionally" not resolving. |

The instrumental opens with an upbeat major key guitar melody. A heavier chord progression swallows the melody. A minor key piano melody swallows the chord progressions. Then a violin swallows everything, spiraling downward, except for a surprising ending. Even though this is an instrumental, it has a meaning. It also fits into the band's theme EP. Here's what the band posted on their website: "The EP will feature eight songs, broken into four 2-song couplets. Track 1 is an instrumental, called "Fade." It sets the mood for what follows, capturing a lighthearted melody that is all too soon subsumed by a darker reality." |

One correction on the lyrics. The word "months" should be "moments." The second stanza actually is: The days I tried to cage Had already escaped; The MOMENTS I tried to save Were wasted anyway The lyrics are correct for the chorus for the album version of the song. Some live versions of the song add the word "and" before "death" in the second, third, fifth, and sixth lines of the chorus. This is an exceptionally touching and tragic/beautiful song. It is a wonderful example of simplicity in music and lyrics that construct something far greater than the sum of the parts. |
