The Stills – Animals + Insects Lyrics 16 years ago
Nothing religious here.
The song is about Tim realizing that humans, even him, are sometimes so much worse then "inferior" animals and insects. He is disgusted by his own and others' behavior. In his case, it probably has something to do with getting drunk/doing something stupid at this "club" he mentions. Whatever it was, it makes him angry enough to want to lash out against someone/anyone.
So, in short, we, humans, act out our basic instincts, such as anger, and often do so irrationally and impulsively. We are animals. We are worse than animals.

Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics 18 years ago
Hey guys, don't get too far ahead of yourselves. Just because the music video is about a mother and her dying child doesn't mean that the song's lyrics were meant to have the same meaning. Look at Brand New's Sic Transit Gloria... video's got nothing to do with what the song's actually about.

This one IS about breaking up, in my opinion.

The Fratellis – Whistle for the Choir Lyrics 18 years ago
with respect to the odyssey, i doubt it, although i see what you mean. it's much more likely that he is a begger because he feels that he'll never be on the same level as the girl (queen). she's nobility, while he is a begger, that sort of thing.

i also disagree with parts of what some people said, especially about the first few lines.

"well it's a big big city, but it's always the same, can never be too pretty, tell me your name."
he is at a bar or a club or at a party, anywhere where there are girls he doesn't yet know. whenever he tries to talk to them, they usually look the other way, but it doesn't matter, he keeps on trying, no matter how pretty or out of reach a girl is.

"Because I may be a beggar and you maybe the queen, I know I maybe on a downer I’m still ready to dream, Now it's 3 o'clock the time is just the time it takes for you to talk"
even though he knows it's pointless, because she doesn't see him as anything more than a "begger," he will sit there listening to her late into the night talk about anything, her problems, her life, what she had for breakfast, because he doesn't notice time pass while he's with her.

"So if you're lonely
Why'd you say you’re not lonely?
Oh you’re a silly girl, I know I heard it so
It's just like you to come and go
And know me, no you don't even know me
You’re so sweet to try, oh my, you caught my eye
A girl like you ’s just irresistible"
eventually he asks if he could walk her home, or keep her company, of whatever, she'll say she's not "lonely," even though all she's got is an empty room to come home to. here and there, she tries asking him some questions, but she isn't really paying attention to the replies, which makes him want her attention all the more.

"Well it's a big big city and the lights are all out
But it's much as I can do you know to figure you out
And I must confess, my hearts so broke in pieces
And my heads a mess
And it's 4 in the morning, and I’m walking along
Beside the ghost of every drinker here who has ever done wrong
And it's you, woo hoo
That's got me going crazy for the things you do"
she leaves, maybe after giving him his phone number, maybe not. either way, she's gone, and that is all he can do to "figure her out" that night, anyway. coming from the bar, he's still thinking of her (it's now 4am, as opposed to 3 when he was talking to her). walking along the streets, still slightly drunk, he thinks he messed up somewhere...

"So if you’re crazy, I don't care you amaze me
But you’re a stupid girl, oh me, oh my, you talk
I die, you smile, you laugh, I cry
And only, a girl like you could be lonely
And it's a crying shame, if you would think the same
A boy like me's just irresistible"
and he doesn't care if she's crazy, she's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen and he's fallen for her. only someone as amazing as her could still be alone in this world. but he concludes that she doesn't feel the same way about him.

then the other chorus repeats.

great song, makes my fingers numb from all the bar chords on guitar.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 18 years ago
"Sweet communist
The communist daughter
Standing on the seaweed water
Semen stains the mountaintops
Semen stains the mountaintops"

I DO believe that this is a song about a rape victim, or the general subject. In communism, all property was taken from the people for general use, sometimes against the person's will. This is the case with this girl. Semen stains the mountaintops refers to how everything around her reminds her of what happened, even the snow on the mountains, wherever she lives.

"With cocoa leaves along the border
Sweetness sings from every corner
Cars careening from the clouds
The bridges burst and twist around"

This verse is really a far shot, since it's mostly a stream of randomness haha. But the way i understand it is this: she's trying to get back to her normal life, a routine, a cup of coffee at a coffee shop on a courner or some street, a beautiful sunny day outside, but no matter how much she tries, she can't help but feel wrecked inside.

"And wanting something warm and moving
Bends towards herself the soothing
Proves that she must still exist
She moves herself about her fist"

Pretty straight forward... surprising after the previous incredibly vague verse, she wants something to let her know that life CAN get back to normal, that who she once was isn't completely lost.

"Sweet communist
The communist daughter
Standing on the seaweed water
Semen stains the mountaintops
Semen stains the mountaintops"

Song ends on a reminder of what she went through.

Obviously this is Jeff Magnum... so there probably isn't a single right interpretation. This is just what this song means for me and why I love it so much. This meaning seems to fit the melancholy "feel" of the whole song.

That's my $0.02... CND. ;)

The song's about a couple who are always fighting about everything, but love each other anyway.
The Stones = Rolling Stones,
but The Roses might also be Guns 'n' Roses.

Bright Eyes – It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends Lyrics 18 years ago
this band is all about the lyrics eh?
brilliant is all i gotta say... such simple words, nothing fancy like some other bands that are trying to impress their fans with vocabulary, and yet simplicity is how conor gets through to you, u don't have to listen to this song over and over to just grasp the lyrics. one listen, and you understand all of it, and it hits you like shots of whiskey that you didn't space out enough.

Arctic Monkeys – Despair in the Departure Lounge Lyrics 18 years ago
I remember this song from the dallas show... beautiful.
meaning's pretty straight forward. the guy's missing his special someone. he's out on a trip, flying somewhere beautiful/very different from home, but everything he sees, everything he does, it just reminds him of her and how she isn't there with him to experience all of these things.

Augustana – Boston Lyrics 18 years ago
Whoops, messed up my pasting... here's the whole post:

the majority of the song is sung about the girl/from the girl's perspective...

----------------------------
"In the light of the sun
Is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
Eyes are red and tears are shed
Some world you must have crossed "
----------------------------
she is obviously going through something and the guy sees her pain, but when he asks her what's wrong, she says,
----------------------------
"You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah - yeah"
----------------------------
she can't open up to him, she tells him that he knows nothing about her, don't understand the pressure/whatever she's under ("you don't wear my chains")
----------------------------
"The essential yet appealed
Carry all your thoughts cross an open field
When flowers gaze at you
They’re not the only ones
Who cry when they see you"
----------------------------
first line i believe is meant to say that she needs him, he's essential AND appealed, but she doesn't realize it.
from there on, it's a metaphor, open field = life/society/social medium she is a part of. she's beautiful, and although she thinks no one can help her, no one understands her, there are others out there who do, most notably the author.
----------------------------
"You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah"
----------------------------
but yeah, she doesn't want to open up to him, blah blah...
----------------------------
"She said, I think I’m going to Boston
I think I’ll start a new life
I think I’ll start it over
No one knows my name
I’ll get out of California
I’m tired of the weather
I think I’ll get a lover
I’ll fly ‘em out to Spain"
----------------------------
this part is weird, because i believe that the "She said" part was an outro for the chorus, and NOT a part of this section. starting with "I think I'm going to Boston," the narrative shifts towards the author. he's had enough with this life he's leading, it's disappointing, he's made too many mistakes, and he simply wants to start over. PERHAPS this is to do with the girl who's mentioned before. he's trying to get her out of his head, and the only way he sees of doing so is to move away and start all over, find someone new.
----------------------------
"I think I’m going to Boston
I think that I’m just tired
I think I need a new town
To leave this all behind
I think I need a sunrise
I’m tired of the sunset
Here it’s nice in the summer
Some snow would be nice
Oh yeah"
----------------------------
tired of the sunset and would prefer a sunrise, obviously refers to start new. if before he constantly felt like his life was coming to an end, there was no light, nothing good in it, now he wants to start again, blah blah you get the point
----------------------------
"Boston
No one knows my name
Yeah
No one knows my name
No one knows my name…

Boston
No one knows my name"
----------------------------
self explanatory

great song, the older EP version is infinitely better recorded than the newer album one, so Limewire it if u must. took a while to get this one off repeat the first time i heard it...

Taking Back Sunday – Little Devotional Lyrics 19 years ago
Or...

This is about Adam. He is generally considered an asshole by most guys, but every single girl I know who listens to TBS is in love with him. This isn't about quote: "what your boyfriend does when you're not around," it's about what the girl does when her boyfriend isn't around. Perhaps, the girl's cheating of her bf with this guy, who takes pride in believing that he's the best at what he does, that is sex. And if at any point the girl considers going back to her boyfriend, he isn't going to ask questions, that's not what he's in this for. In other words, although the girl's the one cheating, the guy's the ass in this case. Love TBS, not a big Adam fan, obviously.

JamisonParker – Emergency Room Romantic Lyrics 19 years ago
oookay, here's my breakdown of this amazing song:

"Through muffled screams and swollen eyes.
From loss and pills and alibis.
I always find my romance in the emergency room."
^obviously talking about a fight, in a past tense. once more this guy find his heart in a state of distress, in a metaphorical "Emergency Room."

"I remind you of everything you hate.
And your remind me, i'm the one to blame."
^still talking about the fight, whatever it is, he knows it's his fault.

"I fight with myself to get you out of my head
But i'm hangin' off of every word you said."
^obvious meaning here. he loves her, but knows that nothing's bringing her back. *or perhaps* he is leaving her because he doesn't want to hurt her anymore. imagine a guy being torn between memories of something great and knowing that he has to end/leave it behind.

"Forced heartbeat and broken mirrors.
Flaws and faults are held so dear.
My reflection makes me sick.
The pain we feel is nothing new."
^going on along the same theme. the singer has been in this situation before, and every time he goes through this, he feels like he's seen it all happen before. this time is a reflection, different, but at the same time the exact same, as all the times before.

"Prescription drugs and photographs.
Love, loneliness and nervous laughs.
^drugs in this case, by context of his other songs, probably refers to anti-depressants. if i recall correctly, both of the band members were on antideps for a while. anyway, taking the pills, he reviews all the photographs he shared with this girl, reminding him of all the great times they had

"What you call "misery through anxious eyes" is something i can see."
^first off, "misery through anxious eyes" describes a situation in which a person feeling pashionate for another, stares at them, so to speak. perhaps this girl has told him about how she looked at him in such a manner before they went out, but now it's his turn, after they broke up, to feel "misery through anxious eyes" directed back at her.

that's my $0.02. this band is amazing, broke my heart when they broke up (the band, not the guy and the girl haha). check out their follow up projects, some good stuff on those too. cheers.

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 19 years ago
first off, everyone has the right to disagree with my opinion.

i don't think this song is religious. i believe jesse is using religion as the defining metaphor throughout the whole CD, much like he used the ocean throughout deja. and he does it well, very well.

jesse is using the religious metaphor of devil/god/sin/struggle to illustrate his feeling of alienation from the world, his disappointment is himself for whatever it was that he's done.

moreover, i even think that this song has something to do with someone he loved at some point. "JC, that's a pretty face, the kind you find on someone that could save." "and it's you and that it's over so i won't even try." I think he's refering to the person he still loves, the person he considered his savior, his "Jesus Christ."

well anyway, that's my $0.02 . brand new is the best band of our time (post-Pink Floyd as far as I'm concerned!) I looved their maturity on this record, and I know that this is becoming a regularly despised saying in the Brand New fan community, but Brand New IS becoming America's Radiohead. my first thoughts when I listened to this song (a month or so prior to release) were... what the hell? sounds like the Bends! or parts of Pink Floyd's Animals/the Wall/Division Bell crossover...

anyway, Jesse is a god, he made a diehard atheist fall in love with a song called Jesus Christ...

Deja was better, but this is still good stuff.... Deja is where it's at.
Anyone notice how the little background vocal chorus part is reminiscent of their early YFW style? if u listen just to the background vocals there u could almost see them fit in some fall out boy song or something?
