i've always read this as being about love.. in the first verse he talks about the places he lost "it" (ie love) - in the chesterfield - maybe something happened with someone which caused a rift or whatever, gambling/diamonds - greed caused him to lose a sense of himself, and ultimatly his ability to love? "Saw it on the silver screen " not entirely sure about this one.. always thought of it as a movie screen.. like in the cinema or something. maybe films present us with this idealistic view of relationships and life etc Preacher says, "don't know what it means" - criticising religion and it's inability to explain what life and llove are really about "Last page ad in a comic book " - we've all seen those "adult phone lines" adverts in magazines.. if it really is about love then this line basically says that you won't find love there, only lust "It ain't carved of stone or made of wood " - people carve there loved ones initials in rocks and trees?? maybe that real love doesnt need to be declared like this "And if you paid for it, then it's still no good " ie paying for "love" (prostitutes?) isn;t the same, or in any way comparable thats just how i've always seen it..... |
