| Ben Folds – You Don't Know Me (feat. Regina Spektor) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

You don't know me at all (Ahhhh, ahh...) Hearing this part today made me think of the way it's sung. It's almost as if the female in this story flips the point of view around to the guy. Where he's dismissing her for not knowing him, she turns it around and says "You don't know me so well either." The male doesn't realize the reason he is dismissing the female also applies to him, and the female is willing to forgive him for it. For the first time the male is flustered and has trouble getting a sentence out; "So what I'm trying to say is - What I'm trying to tell you.." He trips on his own thoughts. He isn't sure how it's best to say "I love you" to this person, maybe "You don't know me" is their way of saying "I love you." |

Not only is it an energetic song but the lyrics are beautiful and well written. "Now December, shares the love we had in September" Oh my. |

| I think this song is about man's eternal struggle and strife trying to fight and distance themselves from sin. I'm not a big religious nut but reading the lyrics definitely made me think of that. | |

The ending of Clerks II made me rethink what this song is about. At the end the two main characters have their own company, they get to do what they want. Sure it's a shitty job but they're in control of it. I think this song is all about closure, everybody aspires to be something bigger to contribute to this "greater good" that they think exists. It's only when they're miserable that they realize how miniscule their own issues are. When they realize this they want to open up everybody elses eyes, making misery for other people so they can have a clearer outlook on their own lives. |

At the start of the song it sounds like the protaganist is in love with another person who doesn't feel the same way for them. The protaganist is throwing the thought around in their head, knowing that they'll do anything in the world for this person and do anything to avoid hurting them (even convincing themselves that it's not such a bad thing to be a tool.) By the second verse the protaganist is starting to open up their eyes, and judging by past failures is well aware where this relationship is going to end up. Every time the object of their desire tries something new to get the protaganist back without making a full commitment it just makes the protaganist more and more aware. By the bridge the protaganist has finally opened up their eyes and reached their conclusion knowing what he/she already knows from previous mistakes. So instead of waiting for it to get there slowly and painfully the protaganist takes action into his/her own hands and is now using their own type of manipulation to get back at the former object of his/her desire. I think that the chorus is all about how easy it is to fall into and out of love. At first it's easy to love somebody, they make it easy with every smile and every blink of their eyes. But then every time that they don't pick you, and every time they look to you for emotional support without giving more than their problems they make it easy to fall out of love with that person. |
