Junior Boys – Like A Child Lyrics 4 years ago
@[crombiegirl00:36124] It's about a dying person being visited in their hospital room by somebody who was important to them. Probably an old love, but almost certainly somebody who had become distant.

Having nursed many patients, it's apt to highlight how childlike people in severely declining health can be.

Arcade Fire – In the Backseat Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is about feeling safe as a child in the arms of your parents. They have all the responsibility, and are looking out for you. Then, one day, you lose them from your life, and suddenly it's your turn to drive. You know how, but everything is different without them. You feel rooted in place. You reach for the wheel.

"One day your parents put you down and never picked you up again."

Oh Land – Perfection Lyrics 11 years ago
Generally speaking, it's about a girl with little sense of identity adopting the mannerisms of a girl who badly hurt a man she desires, and thereby manipulating him into ceding the remnants of his heart to her. Perversely, she finds value in being able to comfort him in this way, and as a result comes to idolize the original personality she has slipped into.

SBTRKT – Something Goes Right Lyrics 11 years ago
I love this song. It's so bittersweet, and it gets me right in my feeling bits every time.

Uptempo, sweet and hopeful while at the same time soberly acknowledging our unyielding despair. We're wounded at the core, but still we make ourselves vulnerable. Nobody that we would wish to has ever cared for long enough. But we're still here, and we can still dream. Alone as we are.

Jessie Ware – Devotion Lyrics 11 years ago
To me it's about the trepidation of reuniting with somebody who has hurt you before, how you feel simultaneously needy and powerless to do anything about it. The speaker seems especially self-aware in that she recognizes her uncertainty about whether her counterpart is trying to rekindle things with her because he (I assume) wants to, or because he's just trying to flee his own problems.

This song also makes me think of somebody, when listened to alone at night. How human of me.

Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics 12 years ago
When I originally heard this song, due to some of the religious overtones on this album I thought perhaps that "the one I love" may have referred to some version of God. I took it in an Eastern religious tradition sort of way since "my mind hold(ing) the key" would then seem to speak of something like enlightenment (which isn't to say that this completely discounts the entirety of the Judeo Christian side of things, as well as some others).

I thought the homosexual interpretation was also interesting and plausible. I think there are some commonalities to both ways of looking at things, though, that might be both more broad and more true to the song's DNA. It's about feeling isolated and alienated both from and due to one's circumstances, and about longing not to be defined so narrowly by those around us, who, in so doing, are complicit in our imprisonment. I'm sure there are many more situations these feelings might apply to.

Music is wonderful, and so is this song.

Garbage – Silence Is Golden Lyrics 12 years ago
That's an extremely ignorant and narrow viewpoint. Withdrawal and defensiveness of the type expressed in these lyrics is always the product of emotional trauma, which itself is usually born out of some form of abuse, typically in developmental phases (read: childhood and adolescence). You would not want to let anybody in either if your experience had taught you that all they would want to do is hurt you, but you still wouldn't want to be alone. If you took the risk -- and you would sometimes -- you'd have a very difficult time opening up no matter how much you wanted to, and if the person you'd let in hurt you (as people tend to do no matter how good their intentions are), it would be that much more painful and only serve to convince you further that you're better off letting nobody in. Basically, barring some long and drawn out miracle, you'd be emotionally fucked no matter what you did.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics 19 years ago
If you think this song is only about sex, then you have limited the song too much, in my opinion. Does it have sexual undertones? Yes, very much so. Are they explicit? Not at all. If you're writing about only one thing, is it a good idea to be explicit? Yeah.

The only reasons, then, for the obscurity of the sexual references that I can think of are either pretentiousness, or the fact that the song was about more than one thing.

Personally, if I had to take a stab at it, I would say that the song is about a relationship, and the things that we choke down for the sake of love, the debasement that we endure for the sake of others. Sexually, emotionally, socially.
