Bahamas – Hockey Teeth Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm gonna keep this short and sweet because Afie does that himself very well in this song. It's a love song to his current love, saying that their love wipes away any others than came before. The "hockey teeth" metaphor is kind of self-evident; hockey players' teeth are all over the place thanks to fights and injuries - basically, they have anything but perfect teeth. And in this he is acknowledging her faults and saying that he's actually glad for them.

Pearl Jam – Deep Lyrics 11 years ago
This is going to keep it pretty simple. The song is about shitty aspects of our lives and how people choose to "cope" in a very unhealthy way. People's pain can run very deep.

First verse: This is a drug addict who may know better - "ponders his maker, ponders his will" - he's trying to examine his behavior, but when he thinks about his relationship to society and feels like he is worthless, he might as well sink that needle in.

Second verse: This could be about religious superiority. Old church-goers think they know best, but to God they are just peons so he laughs at their haughtiness, and sends down his retribution by means of a "burning knife".

Third verse: This is about a girl who wants to think herself harder than she actually is. He doesn't say she IS Christmas clean love, but ALMOST. She gets herself in over her head with some guy (maybe a "john") but it's too late.

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Drying of the Lawns Lyrics 11 years ago
First I'll start with a couple of corrections as I hear them in the song:

"Things that you have seen this night that run by that the river's flow" should be:
"Things that you have seen this night runs by that river's flow"

"I can use you if you're in the flame, I'm a growin' old" should be:
"I can't use you if you're in the flame, I'm a growin' old"

"As when I set my eyes and torched the plans on the mark of you" should be:
"As when I set my eyes on torched up lands of the mark of you"

"She said you follow me like sheep that think this king could do some harm" should be:
"She said you follow me like shep that think this cane could do some harm"

"If pain and awful romance then this mornin' is for us" should be:
"If evenings are for romance then this morning is for us"

There are a couple other lines I'm not sure of either like "the mirage beneath" sounds to me like "the Pirogenes" which I searched and couldn't find anything for. Same goes for "with a sister's heart" sounds to me like "with Zisser's arm" but couldn't find anything for that either. Just a couple of points where being sure of the lyrics might bring more clarity to the interpretation.

Otherwise, I see it like this.

First verse: She needs to leave and soothes him by telling him to think about "softer dreams" instead of the harder things that are real and in front of them. She's pulling the plug but wants to soften the blow for him. There was something natural that brought them together, the "things that you have seen this night" that "run by the river's flow" but she's past it now (growing old) and can't deal with it if he's still so impassioned.

Second verse: Sounds like he's trying to convince himself he can handle being alone. He doesn't just claim he's sailed the dark sea at that point, he mentions that he's said it in the past. What is the mirage beneath the waves? The depth of his sadness or loneliness? I'm not sure. I think the next lines are him trying to say he thinks he's found someone just like him. He's good with the "torched up lands" or perhaps maybe her baggage?

Third verse: She says she will never hurt him even if he is having trouble letting go or acting like a "sheep" following her around. She's still concerned though, but not as a lover. I think maybe she doesn't want to leave, but every time she sees an end to his pattern, "seeing the shore", whenever he finally comes out of it, it doesn't matter because even when he sees the light he doesn't know how to act on it.

Fourth verse: He probably knows better as well, and knows it won't work, but he's being stubborn because he loves her. He's not ready to give up even though she clearly is. He's trying to insist she stay, and maybe is a little childish saying that the movie will be a "never ran" and if she leaves their dreams together will die.

Main chorus: This is her stance. She knows it's not what he wants, but it's just how the cookie crumbles, or how the "lawns dry". She doesn't want that "summer dream" anymore and she's acknowledging it.

Final chorus: This is his final, reluctant acceptance, but he's still stuck in it. The drying of the lawns want to leave him there. He sees no way out at present.

So, maybe not the best interpretation, and of course most of the best songs are vague and leave you guessing, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm way off base. I just had to take a stab at it because I like this song a lot.

Local Natives – World News Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is pretty straight up in terms of meaning. The first verse describes the mundanity of getting frustrated in traffic on the highway - some people get incredibly worked up about traffic, and even more so, some people are never happy with what they already have (ie. a space in a lane already). But he's saying it doesn't really matter which lane you're in - just calm down - you'll get where you're going. And the second verse kind of takes this a little further: while you're complaining about traffic on the highway people all over the world are dealing with hardships that make traffic laughable. The line "a cloud covers your car at just the right time for you to see the dark on your face in the mirror" is really key. Maybe he's saying you are finally able to get a look in the mirror at just how silly you're being in comparison to what you're hearing on the radio. And then in the third verse he gets a phone call from his mother, and instead of his usual knee-jerk reaction of yelling at his mother and deflecting the problem, he takes it on himself.

So basically, to me, this song is saying "stop getting frustrated at such petty things and be nice to those around you." And like allmyliesareonlywishes said, even though it's a kind of cliche, you can't experience the good without the bad.

Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks Lyrics 16 years ago
This is definitely about a partner not willing to commit, or maybe that person is afraid of trying for a real love - a real relationship.

"See the pall of day -
a rountine malaise"

He dreads waking up to a life that is filled with boredom and the light of day is marred by the situation.

"Dreamed of all the ways
momentary phase"

He's trying to convince himself that this is going to work, and that this is only a passing thing, but he's spent time dreaming either of all the possible ways that it will work, or alternatively all the ways it won't.

"Every time you try
quarter half the mile"

Obviously the partner is making some kind of effort, but it just isn't enough. They only go one quarter of one half of what is needed.

"Just like yesterday
I told you I would stay"

He needs to constantly reassure his partner, even though he knows better.

"Would you always
maybe sometime
make it easy
take your time"

Well, maybe the partner is trying their best. He asks them to always remember, but maybe that's not so realistic, so at least sometimes they should try. I think maybe the word "I'll" is deleted from the third line... so it would be "I'll make it easy," as in, I'll make it easy on you (the partner). And the last line, well, I guess he knows he's not going anywhere - he's promised to stay, right? - so there's no rush for them to figure out how they feel.

So maybe this song is really just a frustrated plea, but for something like that it is an incredibly beautiful song, and seemingly free of the normal angst associated with difficulties in love. Maybe this is too simplistic, but considering the lyrics are very simple, I don't think you need to read much into them to figure it out.
