La Dispute – A Departure Lyrics 14 years ago
The whole album, like the previous, has a story that flows through the songs.

It's divided into four parts as the lyrics show in this song:

A Departure

"First, the feeling of abandonment":
Harder Harmonies
St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Blues
Edit Your Hometown

A Letter

"Then trying to cope":
Safer in the Forest/Love Song for Poor Michigan
The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit

A Poem

"Then death and hope":
King Park
Edward Benz, 27 Times
I See Everything

A Broken Jar

"And the thing itself, waiting for me":
All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks
You and I in Unison

Every song beginning with "A..." provides the shift in content, and the layout of the entire album provides a sort of symmetry:

Introduction
3 songs
Shift
2 songs
Shift
3 songs
Shift
2 songs

There are various references to "Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair" throughout the album, mostly towards the end:

Safer in the Forest/Love Song for Poor Michigan: "I will hold these old streets sweetly in my head like her." (Specifically Andria: "So dear, no matter how we part, I hold you sweetly in my head.")

All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks: "Did you find your lover laying in your bedroom with another and then did you let it hover over you and everything else well after the fact?" (References the entire album.)

You and I in Unison: "When I sing, don't I sing your name right at the same time that I sing my own?"
"I will sing sweetly..."
"I'll sing your name in every line, just like I did throughout this, just like I've always done."
"Until I die, I will sing our names in unison." (All referencing lines from Andria.)

Earl Sweatshirt – Luper Lyrics 14 years ago
"‘tab and score’, which is just basically sheet music. (Tabs and scores are often sought by non-serious novices.) When you hear it as this, instead of ‘fam of four’ you can hear it as ‘a FM of 4’. This is a F Major VARIATION of 4 that repeats (The previous line he states he’ll be back for more). He’s still saying, through music terminology that he’s not like the others that only want one thing that’s not really even serious, he’s different, has different desires, and wants to repeat."

Fear Before – …As A Result Of Signals Being Crossed Lyrics 14 years ago
The meaning of this song is intertwined in the meaning of "Complete and Utter Confusion..."

"Complete and Utter Confusion..." talks about the influence of corporate America and controlling the media. The last lines of the song, "Tell me what it is you fear the most. We'll take it, adjust it, use it on the radio," mirror the first lines of "...As a Result of Signals Being Crossed."

"You can't keep God off the radio... You can't keep the devil from the media... The church is trying to peddle something much worse."

The signals being crossed are religion and the media.

Also, "The Always Open Mouth" is a concept album related to the degradation of society and its inevitable end.

The Sound of Animals Fighting – Uzbekistan Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with ShiftingStarlight's point of view, but the spoken part at the end seems to be making a different point.

It's not just saying to be objective towards life.
She's saying that good and bad exist as two sides of the same coin, and as such, we shouldn't go through life wishing that bad things didn't happen, because without those bad things, we wouldn't have the good things. ("If love didn't exist, there wouldn't be any horrible things. You must care to cry, love something in order to hate something. You must have a heart in order for it to be broken... They feel entitled to happiness and feel anger when it is not waiting for them.")

She continues on to make xomgkillme's point, telling us to wake up.
Consumerism is shady: those who sell us things base their products around our insecurities and our constant need to be better and to impress those around us.
The solution is to think for yourself. ("You will be happy. You will be empty, because it is not about the product, but the feeling they try to convey. And it is not for your benefit, but for the benefit of the holders of the company... Use your hands, your thoughts, your hunger. These things are yours and yours alone.")

The Sound of Animals Fighting – The Ocean and The Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
a few minor corrections to the talking bit.

We are taught to think of our success in terms of numbers.
If touching one person's life is a good thing, then touching one thousand people's lives must be a great thing.
It's easy to see where we learned to think this way.
Our whole society revolves around mass production.
The more units we can move,
the more customers we can serve,
the more votes we can get,
the more money and the more stuff we have, is better, right?
Maybe it's not possible to touch one thousand people as quickly or as powerfully as one person or ten people.
Maybe it's not really so revolutionary after all to have one person or a group of twenty tell everybody else what's right.
Wouldn't it be better to try a decentralized approach where everyone works closely with those around them, instead of a few people leading an anonymous mass?
Do you have to save the world all by yourselves?
Why don't you trust anyone else to do it with you?

Brand New – Daisy Lyrics 15 years ago
The verses both show a sense of general discontent.
By metaphorically placing himself in the different shoes, he's telling how he feels about the destruction he's caught in.

The bridge/outro could be a reference to a funeral.
In this case, "take all these things and bury them fast" could mean not only putting away the corpse but all the feelings left behind.
Prayer goes on at funerals; therefore the whole "seeds... roots... grass..." line could mean praying that the person lives on somewhere.
The sky knowing it's time to start over strengthens this.
All the while, he repeats that it's alright, it'll be easier this way.

The intro gives the song a religious subtext.
Also, I dunno if it'll help, but the original poem:

"Just as I am - without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - though toss'd about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
-O Lamb of God, I come!"

While the hymn referenced has a positive tone, this song sounds disheartened.

Just thoughts on it.

Protest the Hero – Turn Soonest to the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
"Labels and expectations when you were young and modern seventeen in vogue and vague pursuit of a cosmopolitan dream"

Dunno if anyone noticed but in this line, there's references to three pop-culture magazines: "Young and Modern (YM)", "Vogue", and "Cosmopolitan."
Maybe saying that being a whore is the popular thing to do?

In relation to Shevanel Cut a Flip, which was inspired by Waking Life and was a take on dreams, Shevanel Take 2 is just another dream.
It's a different "take" on the same subject.

The Mars Volta – The Widow Lyrics 16 years ago
The man referred to in the song is a drug dealer who deals drugs to a large group of people, including the narrator. The first verse makes it known that he is a clove smoker and that he talks through wheezing coughs.
The pre-chorus is the narrator's use of drugs. Hearing him every night in every pore is the feeling that the drugs give him nightly. The drug makes him warm.
The chorus describes the height of the high; 'freeze without an answer' means that drugs don't provide solutions. When you're at the peak, you don't feel the shame of being an addict. The drug makes him feel like he is never alone, hence the 'never sleep alone.'

The second verse is once again describing the drug dealer. He's watching people buy drugs, 'flocking to him.' An isle of open sores refers to the repetitive usage of needles, proliferating the healing of the sores. The drug dealer knows that the how addicting his drug is; therefore, the taste is such to die for.
The new line in the pre-chorus is a drugged-up rambling.

The concluding chorus with the added "Let me die" shows the addicted narrator's tiredness of the never-ending cycle of his drug abuse.

"The Widow" could fit in as the narrator, and the shame in the chorus could be the fact that she is a widow. The irony is that although she's a widow, she feels that she can 'never sleep alone' because of her addiction.

The Devil Wears Prada – You Can't Spell Crap Without "C" Lyrics 16 years ago
The line 'To the road, your freedom is awesome, but does it compare to the sweet embrace of my love?' looks to me like it's comparing the freedom one has when not saved (i.e. 'to the road') to the love one feels when saved.
Just throwing that out there.

Brand New – Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades Lyrics 16 years ago
He's not just looking for a 'meaningful relationship.'
He's trying to lose his virginity, using advice from his friends.

And he finds a girl that's not "too hard to sell" meaning she's pretty loose, and he therefore won't have to try too hard.

Pretty much had the same situation happen to me, yay.

Four Year Strong – Beatdown In The Key Of Happy Lyrics 17 years ago
Hit the pavement and drive for the first time in a long time
And pray that everything works out fine
She said try to have a good time
And get your fill of cheap thrills
And try anything to save a dime
So let's get moving, and let's get grooving
To every single word we couldn't know
Til we get carsick and play our hands quick
And try to save ourselves along the way

You're a gamble; you've got nothing left to lose
You think you got me in the back of your pocket, you do
So take a breath and try to keep it down
Cause I love these girls but I hate this town
But I'm positive that there's nothing about you to get to know

Hit the lights and get down for the last time in a long time
And try to think of every last line
She said try to have a good time
Don't put up with the hard hits
They'll just hit you harder every time
That you get moving; you'll just keep losing
What little bit of mind that you have left
So try and please me, but take it easy
And try to keep your thoughts above the belt

You're a gamble; you've got nothing left to lose
You think you got me in the back of your pocket, you do
So take a breath and try to keep it down
Cause I love these girls but I hate this town
But I'm positive that there's nothing about you to get to know

OH!

-insane breakdown/bridge-

You're a gamble; you've got nothing left to lose
You think you got me in the back of your pocket, you do
So take a breath and try to keep it down
Cause I love these girls but I hate this town
But I'm positive that there's nothing about you to get to know

i think raptor's pretty much right about the meaning.

but it could also go with a relationship.
driving and praying that things work out fine are ways of coping with struggles.
'last lines' could mean they won't see each other for awhile, which could explain these struggles and the advice 'she' gives to him.
the first lines of the chorus describe someone deep into someone else ("you think you got me in the back of your pocket, you do", etc.)

but i can't help but think the last line of the chorus ("but i'm positive that there's nothing about you to get to know") can be applied to how most people generically say 'get to know me' when they're pretty much the same as everyone else.
or maybe he's teasing the girl for saying it?

i dunno, just what i thought. xD
