Anathallo – Hoodwink Lyrics 16 years ago
Guys, consider the title: hoodwink. To a hobbit it means, "tricksy"

It's a deception. And this song speaks of the primary deception of out time; Postmodernism. The "signifier not that which is signified" is a dead giveaway. We decide what is truth. Whatever works for you, man. So we assume the position of ulimate source or truth. We just decide what is true.

He's speaks of the brightness of the basics of becoming your own god and therefore creating your own meaning- being the signifier. And then we see that the best this can produce is also relative moralism. AKA, Im not as bad as that guy or I haven't killed anybody(see "for our scales"). And that is the primary deception that keep people from accepting the gospel of Jesus. People that embrace relativism think that they are ok because you can always find someone worse off than you. So we weigh our scales in the eyes of mankind and justify our actions. We make ourselves good again. That is not possible in view of the Word of God. Only dependence on the redeeming power of Jesus can make us good. Otherwise we deceive ourselves into thinking we are better than we are.

Josh Ritter – Thin Blue Flame Lyrics 17 years ago
As a Christian i totally disagree. I dont think he's calling the existence of God into question so much as common (mis)conceptions about his nature as reflected in most of Christian culture and practice. "If God's up there" - as in if you separate him from the creation he has made. Or your doctrine from transformative truth. Maybe its my interpretation. I guess my relationship with Christ creates a lens through which i see everything. Either way, i got that we are never to be so heavenly minded that we not any earthly good. OR, we shouldnt keep our future ideal selves in focus and miss out on the daily work we have to do. I think this song is ultimately about being present- being completely with who you are with in the space you are with no desire for more. Shalom.

does this have to do with Aaron's parents being from different faith backgrounds? If i am not mistaken, his father is Jewish and his mother is a christian. Obviously he is heavily influenced by Jewish teachings and even speaks some Aramaic. maybe the chorus at least is about him trying to reconcile the two belief systems. maybe not.

I think its more complicated than that. My theory is that it parallels the idea of our temporary lives compared to God's existence. The "I do not exist" and later, " I do not exist, only you exist" work into what i believe to be the theme of the album. Its about faith growing in an eternal God and losing interest in temporary things. I agree that the change from yellow to orange and then brown parallel the dying of a leaf but i think it is used to illustrate his losing interest in this temporary world. I think he is saying that his faith used to be based on the leaf and spider or the things he saw God doing in his immdeiate surroundings. The tangible things we love to base our faith anf entire existence on. However, as he matured he realized that he cant depend on those things Solomon would claim to be completely meaningless and that all he should concentrate on is the God who Is and Was and Is to come. What he believes doesnt matter if he allows God to exist in an increasing abundance until nothing of himself is left. can i get a witness?
