The song is awesome, the lyrics kinda' vague. There's obviously the loner, the fourteen year old boy who has "blown 'em off", he has virtually no-one, perhaps he sits in front of his "machine"/computer all day? He has noone to care when he get's scared, and he obviously gets scared one day. He has someone who cares, probably family/parents. "When you said alright / I thought you meant alright". But he "blows them off" rather than to confess his own problems and loneliness. I can imagine this kid goes along and try to kill himself or something, because the person caring, asking the questions that are answered with "alright" at some point suddenly realize that the boy didn't really mean "alright" at all. |

Well first off all, I don't buy the whole drowning/killing story. And I don't buy the marriage/love thing either. That's just too easy. Lets go through the lyrics: There's two counterparts in this song, lets call them A and B, where A is "I" or Phil Collins, and B is "you", the sinner in this sorry story. -1. A's "been waiting for this moment" probably the moment when he's to meet B again. -2. A hates B so much, he wouldn't save B if B was drowning. -3. A have seen B before, has seen B commit some sort off "sin". The sin has obviously awoken an anger in A. This is the only occation where their paths have crossed. -4. B might/probably hasn't seen A, B doesn't know who A is. -5. B has "been somwhere", and is happy about "it". He has lied about "it". -6. A can never forget such a sin. -7. B has good reasons to keep his silence about the sin, to lie about it. -8. They both hurt from this. One story that might fit into there "facts": it might seem as if A's wife/gf/whatever has cheated on him with B, and that A at some point discovered them. 1. A want's to get his revenge on B. 2. A hates B intensely for this. 3. A and B have only met once, when A saw B f**k his wife/gf. 4. B didn't see this, he was "busy" with ^^. 5. B has "been on/with" A's spouse. B keeps this secret. 6. A can of course never forget the sight of B "doing" his spouse. 7. Obvious. 8. A is of course hurt by this. I can also imagine B has a feeling of guilt. This is just one idea. It can be so much more. |
