I once read that Trent Reznor said this song was like losing a girlfriend - he wrote it, but the Man in Black made it his own so very much.
This is one of the few songs that can make me cry almost without fail, and I think it's beautiful. The original may have been about drugs and/or self-harm, but this version, to me, is definitely about the inevitability of death and how the singer mourns his mistakes - but would probably make them all over again if he was given the chance. |

I adore this song - It's my favourite from the album. I think, in a way, it's about what happened to The Patient in the past. I think it's about being in a love/hate relationship, or being stuck somewhere and having no choice but to stay with someone he, in the past, didn't really get on with. |
