Heatmiser – Plainclothes Man Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this is about someone who was abusive to him. When he says "They say that I'll recover my love of her once in a while but I don't know, I don't think so" for some reason I think this is about his mom. Like he is angry at her for not protecting him or something. I definitely do not get "breakup" vibe from this song |

Elliott Smith – Abused Lyrics | 17 years ago |
other people see some evil intention but the closer you get, the more you get thats like the saddest line cause it can be taken two ways (both of which are so sad). one is that when he tries to asssert that he's been abused, certain people think he's lying. the other is that the people who believe him automatically call the abuser evil, and elliott's hesitant to make that assertion |
Elliott Smith – Almost Over Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the strange thing about this song is its the kind of things you'd think OTHER people were saying to him. it reminds me so much of the kind of frustration and anger you get from being involved with someone who is deprssed and/or a drug addict. maybe its his black eyes watching the clock, enduring the tirade, knowing that the "worst part's almost over" |
Elliott Smith – Crazy Fucker Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think he's talking about himself, as in i think he is actually the crazy fucker from the south. |
Elliott Smith – A Question Mark Lyrics | 17 years ago |
for some reason, for many many years i kind of assumed (without reflecting deeply on it) that this song was aimed towards his parents. and I really can't explain why. but now that i'm looking at it closer, i actually think you guys are right about almost everything, only i totally don't get the love-gone-awry thing at all. i think its the same thing as was said, but directed more towards friends. There's something in the phrase "say your final words but honesty and love could have kept us together" does not sound like two lovers |
Elliott Smith – Don't Go Down Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Well, to porcelineaskies, I like your interpretation of the "snowball in hell" line but i'm not sure if i agree with it. it seems like he's had a steady stream of long relationships throughout his life, but its still an interesting notion and it got me thinking. anyways, I think one of, if not THE most pivotal line in this song is "i knew the sense of worthlessness she'd have to rise above" I think the reason he is so drawn to this girl is because he sees himself, or his pain, in her. they are kind of kindred spirits. The fact that he talks about fighting off her father... and we all know his alleged problems with his stepfather.. quite coincidental. |
Elliott Smith – Either/Or (No More) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm wondering if some of the times he says "you" in this song he is talking to himself. "I’ll write the pages you rip out, back in their places again One day you’ll know what you’re talking about I can hardly imagine" i don't know, maybe i am just speculating here. It seems to me that one part of himself is talkig to the other, one part that wants to delve into these deeper issues, and the other part censoring itself. which leads me to: "Filling in these blanks that you create Every time you win some petty score Posing as hardcore, oh yeah, either/or" I always assumed he was talking to someone else here, but i'm not so sure now. it seems a little self-admonishing. have you ever written something, a poem or a song or whatever, and just ripped it out and threw it away later? I have. something about "one day you'll know what you're talking about" just really reminds me of poetry, that you write and then you think it makes no sense but it does. |
