| this song is probably about drugs, but i think it's written ambiguously on purpose. there are parts that feel like a love song to an actual woman, and parts that really only fit as a drug song. so some people will hear it as one, some people will hear it as the other. that's part of the beauty and mystery of it. it's genius. | |

People ask me sometimes if Jeff or Cyrus are based on anybody, and of course the answer's "no," but only because of course they're dozens of guys. I knew a dude in high school whose girlfriend didn't know he'd been locked up until he'd already been gone for half a day: by the time she found out, he was in Utah, not to emerge for, I think, a year or two. To take somebody's adolescence away is to deny that person some of the closest looks at God's face that we ever get on this planet; I try not to hate the parents who, as misguided as confused, take young men and women away from their friends and their lives to send them away. But it's hard. I try not to excuse the destructive things adolescents sometimes do to express their pain, but in my gut, when I write a song in which a couple of teenagers vow to take revenge on the grownups who're fucking up their lives, well, I cast my lot with the teenagers. They may do wrong sometimes, but their hearts aren't rotten yet, and the light is strong within them. |

| i think that people will see it as how they want it to be - from a male or female's perspective. maybe it's that way on purpose - it could make sense either way. i would discourage people from automatically assuming that it can't be about a woman missing another woman, but, in the end, what really matters is what it means to you and what you get out of it. it is a truely beautiful song, and one of it's greatest strengths is that many different people can relate to it. | |

seems to me like this song is about being in a mental hospital. a lot of it appears to me like a battle against the forces that put her there - her parents, the doctors, and her own "personal demons." the "You’re always telling me that you're dying to know But you’re not really listening" seems like a reference to the doctors asking her questions, but then ignoring her answers to enforce their own ideas of what's wrong. "If I could shut them up just for a second, I swear... I could stop this catastrophe!" people who hear voices often feel that if they can have one moment of silence in their heads, they could figure things out. mental illness seems especially applicable to the last lines - the idea that her illness is preventing her from all of the things she could be. |

alright, i love this song a whole lot. its not only my favorite on the album, but quite possibly my favorite dresden dolls song atogether. delilah is the name of a character in the bible, and the name, according to wikipedia means in hebrew "one who weakened or uprooted and improverished." Delilah went kind of uncover to figure out what made Samson so powerful, and by seducing him, she discovered that his power was in his hair. she betrayed him to his enemies. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the song, but I thought I'd point it out. for me, the most powerful thing about song is the tone of uselessness. far too many songs about women in abusive/unhealthy relationships take on an air of 'i would never put myself in a situation like that' or 'if you listened to me, i could save you.' but delilah doesnt do that. its kind of a song of surrender to a force completely beyond amanda's control, and that as much as she loves delilah and will stand by her, there really is nothing she can do to save her. you can feel the desperateness in her voice, she wishes there was some way she could get through to her, but she can't. |

i think this song makes an allusion to the original cinderella story, where the step sisters cut their toes and feet in order to fit into the glass slipper. "its a gory sort of story thats been told a hundred times before" - the story of cinderella is told and retold, but often omitting the gruesome ending "how many stitches do you think it takes to fix a cut that bad" - in some versions of the story, the step sisters end up actually cutting their feet off entirely. i think that maybe this song is about trying to fit into the shoe that you think would bring you your fairytale ending - the gruesome actions you are forced to carry out, and the realization that it still wont end happily ever after. even after you squeeze on the shoe, you still have to deal with the pain and the blood and the brokeness and incompletenes you feel on the inside. the protagonist eventually becomes disenchanted with fairytale endings, but still feels that she needs to fit that role, and it drains her physically and emotionally - "its exhausting to keep smiling when your toes are bleeding through the floor" in the end she's so exhausted from trying to be someone she's not that she gives up on happy endings, and even if it were to come, she's "too sore from fitting exactly to ride into setting suns " |
