Oh the archdunke interpretation is really interesting, I think it hasduel meanings personally, which is pretty amazing that one song could be about a historical figures assasination but also sexual tension between passing strangers.
As for the sexual tension bit its interesting the role the narrator finds himself in. Just because typically it would be the guy who takes the girl out, who makes the first move. |

It really annoyed me when Flowers was saying Andy could be a girl. I mean Andy hangs plays on the boys athletic teams and hangs at is cars with girls. It felt like a total cop out. Flowers is clearly straight but likes doing the whole sexually ambiguous eyeliner thing which is fine, but then once he gets sick of people questioning his sexualty bam its on with the butch cowboy look and Andys a girl. |

I love this song, sing 'my baby doll dont go to london' all the time to my soon departing friend.
I'm not sure on this interpretation but I think it maybe about how the seediness of certain places can suck you and change you. Ofcourse the subject is a guy who uses people and hurts them while feeling bitter towards them all the while. However the 'palis de danse' 'harehills' and dont go to London make me think she s singing about certain people you meet in such environments.
But I ssupect Dorian writes these songs in a Morrissey style asin a verse is personal experience, the end line thrown in from a movie and the general theme from a different one |

very clear meaning. Arctic were on Mtv news talking bout this song. Just met this guy brian back stage and were in awe of him. Alex said later one of the guys even drew a picture of him and he wroe the song bout wat he thought brian was like.
Isnt it brilliant that the 1st sonf from there 1st album was 'I bet you look good on the dance floor' and now the 1st song from this is about someone who defnitly would look good on a dance floor. Both songs of strange praise for an awe inspiring person |

Well Alex explained this song lots of tmes. It's about his friend who actually exists Michael, who is straight, but went to a gay club saw this guy and started making out with him. Alex wrote it from the guys perspective and it's kind of a in joke. Love this song sooo much. I think Alex is dating Eleanor something from this Scottish band. And do u want to is a collection of lines he over heard at a party. love this song. I know Alex is straight but the 'ties' line always made me think he's enjoyng the matinee with a guy. Also cos it seems like their in the same 'academic factory'. Not very important detail though. I think it's about bunking off. Not neccessarily school but work. Maybe going to a film or aybe just daydreaming of when you'll be famous and the people you'll talk to. At the same 'bunking off' is related to sex, when he was younger in school and now he's older purposefully bumpng into the other person. But its still like an escape from life like the matnee was , as he charms her, pretendin to be somethin else and she imagines a better life |

This song is a good example of why I love this website. I''ve listened to it lots of times but I never figured the Jesus analogy. I always saw this song as very dark. I thought it was describing before and the consequences afer a rape. The fact that it keeps saying 'she wont let you' while describing all the things this guys wants to do 'touch', 'hold'. And ofcourse 'look what you've done boy'. Obviously this guy has done something bad and the narrator cant belive he's done it just cos of someone whose 'not so special'. This is virtually the chorus and I do think it tells the most about he song and I think it's a lot more sinister than unrequited love. The wishing she'll 'never come back round here', also might this guys scarred of getting caught after committing the crime. And well obviously 'it is with ure sins uve killed me', rapes one of the worst sins. I know it seems like I'm stretching but thats always wat I thought it was about |

Ok well bypassing the narrators sexuality, it's probably just a confused teenager. Andy's the sport star in high school and suddenly the protagonist starts having feelings for him. He doesnt understand these feelings but he cant stop having them and that's what the 'shut up' thing is. He wrestly with himself and he keeps seeing Andy around and keeps thinkin bout him, but doesnt want to. At the same time, he might feel a kindred spirit in Andy, that might explain his obsession with him and the 'pain u drain from love'. He knows Andy's not gay and probably has a girlfriend but he cant bear the thought theirs no room for him in his life. He might dream of the possibilty of them having a secret relationship, where he 'leaves his no in his locker'. It's probably something hes seen andy do with girls, and wishes it were him. But he keeps wishin he wasnt thinking these things. Andy's gonna be remembered as a football star. There's something strange in the 'in staf the verdicts in' line. I think Flowers is hinting there's somethin more to Andy, than typical athlete. Like maybe there's a possibilty he might return the teens felings. Not sure bout the 'sweet face' line |

I've always thought this song draws parralels between starting a fight and starting a relationship with someone. He's all ready for action and thinks he sure he wants this but then when he actually starts either punching or kissing he sees its a big mistake and the other person totally isnt ready for it. And his punishment for this is either a jail sentence, real or metaphoric. I think it's how love/ lust can be so strong it's almst like an attack. The 'grabbed' and 'hardfaced three word gesture' and 'that's what traditon means' suggests to me a fight- a 'lets go and show how manly I am' type. If it's a relationship, I'd say Moz started one (' our friendly venture' with someone who really wasnt ready, couldve been a flaky girl or a confused guy and now that Moz isnt sure and feels he should end it, but its painful and typical of him and he thinks he might suffer for it |

this is the one Smiths song where I really think I know the meaing. Moz is just singing about all these different people he's wanted to sleep with- someone who asked him the time, some girl with nice breasts, someone he fancied in school. And he's thinking about all these people and the song is filled with sex and lust and innuendo and then finally he comes to the conclusion that none of that matters and what really matters is art and literature. |
