Good point, Toocold. He also seems quite keen on other Manchester offspring such as The Fall (vocal stylings and lyrics in Losing My Edge and Movement etc.) |

Vietnam?... maybe on one level. But Eric and the band came out of working class roots in the grey industrial wasteland of north-east England. "In this dirty old part of the city" speaks to me more about personal experiences in Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough of the 60s rather than the jungles of a far off land Britain wasn't involved in. |

Superb pop-punky-indie-whatever anthem. Like the rising of a phoenix after the murky, slurred, confused stuff they (well MES...) put out during the 90s. As good as anything they did harking back to "Totally Wired".
I hear it as an autobiographical rant about getting old, getting drunk and not giving a shit about being slagged off, put down or "being nice" for the sake of some PR. The man who wrote these lyrics has never sold out. Don't think I'd ever want to meet Mark E Smith but I know I'll always watch out for the next Fall album... |

I think you are spot on, cupkate. This song reminds me of a similar experience I had but from the male perspective.
Other wonderful songs by Ms John Soda that strike a personal chord are "Sometimes Stop, Sometimes Go" and "Scan the Ways"... |

Good comments, especially davo about the plastic-elastic thing. Should comment that I think this is also a sideways tribute to Ray Davies and The Kinks. Plastic Man was one of The Kinks' fabulously cutting songs about the British middle-class. The Fall later did a great version of "Victoria" which had a similar theme... |

Actually, Deathsdoor99, I think you couldn't be more wrong. This song was about CLASS differences and relationships. A working class guy who feels awkward yet proud of his background in a relationship with a "posh" girl and her world (well..a bit middle-class).
Decent lyric writing took a bit of a holiday during the 70's but then the Pistols covered this song and you can see why. It wasn't until Pulp wrote "Common People" that you had a true "Brit-pop" (Urgh I hate that term) sequel though... |

Some other lyric sites say the line:
"making mistakes and then I'll ease her mind"
is:
"Making mistakes and then I need some why"
I swing between both interpretations every time I listen! |
