According to an interview with Silberman (the songwriter) in The Guardian he's never read The Belljar, and while he was kind of thinking of Plath, the Sylvia the song refers to is from Leonard Michael's novel 'Sylvia'.

There was an interview/piece on the album in The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/may/13/antlers-concept-album) recently that said the album is about the narrator's relationship with an abusive girlfriend, and then staying with her during her treatment for cancer. As The Antler's were tweeting the article and recommending it I'd guess it was reasonably on the money, and for me it certainly matches a lot of lyrics throughout the album and song, e.g.
In which case, yes it is his girlfriend/wife and not his daughter - so good job not interpreting the songs well wilsoncsean, though good job reading a single review on pitchfork. |

Amazing song... the rain falling and bare guitar compliment the vocals and lyrics so well. You can see the sailor standing in the rain after 3 long years at sea, watching his family in a house and life he no longer belongs in, that he no longer fits into. Standing outside with the match and gasoline, so angry and so hurt... |

My favourite song on The Mighty Ocean, I just love how resigned and weary he sounds...
I'm not at all sure, but it sounds like he's describing going over a waterfall in a barrel - as a way out, an end. A love gone wrong that he's escaping...? |

re: Spankdidly and everyone else reading religion into this song.
Hate to rain on your parade but it's not a religious song. The album title refers to a quote from Daniel Johnston (who's schizophrenic). Jesus Christ is about religion, but why does that mean every other song on the album must be as well? Given Jesse has never stated any religious beliefs or leanings it seems foolish to assume he is both Christian and so devout that he only writes about Christianity |

agreed, a gorgeous song and a slow burner, not originally my favourite Knife song but after 7 years of listening to this album it's far and away my favourite song now. Beautiful |

To me it seems to be about suicide and depression, the Doctor trying to reach out to the patient:
"If this was the last time now you should tell us what to do"
Also I love the last line, it's such an effective song, so short, so sad |
