Oddly enough, I like the parts when she's not singing, but harmonising (not sure if that's the right term for it, but it's the parts between each verse). Anyway, that has nothing to do with meaning so ... I agree, I believe the song is indeed about death, accepting death, welcoming it even. 'Deep Silent Complete, Black Velvet sea, The sirens are calling for me.' Pretty basic, really: Black Velvet sea = death, a total sea of nothingness; the sirens - calling her to her death. Oh, and this line really sticks with me for some reason: 'The age will say 'This poet lies, Heaven never touched earthly face' I think it's a reference to some poet or other who claimed Heaven was on earth (couldn't tell you which one, or if that's even true), and this song is basically disagreeing. Perhaps a link to the earlier line (the Black Velvet sea bit), in that there is nothing after death. Meh, I'm just speculating. I'm probably wrong ;) |

| It's a very beautiful song; melodic, and just a little bit haunting ... But it doesn't stand out, you know? Tarja's voice was powerful and unique, it was one of the things that made Nightwish stand out from other rock/metal/whatever bands. Annette's voice is very pretty and all, but it's generic. It sounds like any one of a number of female vocalists. Still, I can get used to it, I suppose, and I actually do really like the song a lot. | |
| Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend Lyrics | 18 years ago |

'Sending out messages of boyfriend-stealing is better than sending out messages of superficiality? Umm since when?' I never said it was better, or at least that's not what I meant. To be honest, boyfriend-stealing and superficiality are about as bad as each other, although I sometimes think it's possible to hurt people more with superficiality. Oh, and Ghizzle? I really don't think it sends a message at all. You're probably right, she could have done it just for the money, and I'm not disputing that. What I don't agree with is the fact that everyone is taking the subject of her song so seriously, when she's not the first person to sing about such things, and she certainly won't be the last. THAT'S what I was trying to say Royal Hermione Emma - She also said in an interview that she was drunk when she recorded/wrote this song. Don't you think that's somewhat worse than singing about boyfriend-stealing? |

| This is getting ridiculous. So you don't like the song, think Avril Lavigne has 'sold-out', or are worried about the message she's sending to kids; all of that's fine, but I really don't think this song was meant to be taken so SERIOUSLY. Is this the only song that tells young girls that they have to be pretty and popular? Is this the only video in existence to show an 'unpopular' girl in a bad light? I really don't think so. Turn on your T.V at any point in time and you can find beautiful men and women cavorting across the screen in very little clothing. Think about the message THAT'S sending. And to be honest, this song is little better than 'Sk8r Boi' which teaches superficiality (i.e. that the boy in question wasn't good enough for the girl ... until he became famous of course, so then it was alright to want him) and also the demise of correct spelling, grammar, etc. Just a little food for thought ... feel free to ignore me :) | |

| The paino bit at the beginning is amazing. I love pianos, I don't know why. The crash of thunder in the middle nearly gives me a heart attack everytime - you'd think I'd be used to it now that I know it's coming, but no! So yeah ... the sound of the rain is really soothing, but I don't like the end because it sounds really ... flat? I don't know if that's the right word for it, but it sounds very dark and almost lethargic. To me, anyway. Not sure if that's what everyone gets ... And this was used for 'Away From Me'? Now I've gotta go check :) | |
