| I believe he is stating the song lyric speaks for itself, then goes on to say what was going on in his life when he wrote it, There is a difference between inspiration and meaning. His life was in transition, his values were shifting and this kindled his creativity. If the lyric is self-explanatory, it does not mention family tragedy or birth of a son, even tangentially. | |

Commenting on his failed relationship, the songwriter, humbly "the author of the small work," requests that all the rumors and speculation regarding what went wrong cease and that until people stop judging him with their preconceived notions he has nothing to say. The next verse addresses possible reconciliation, hinting that the gossip is not helping this possibility. Emotions are in flux and the outcome is still unknown. The shortened verse (middle 8?) conveys that although the relationship may of lacked true intimacy, he is still there for his partner if needed. So is this affair truly over? Or will it be repaired and grow even stronger? It is at present in turmoil and transition and only time will tell. This song has such great retro appeal. It reminds me of 'alone again or," by Aurthur Lee with the Latin horns and has the country folk feel of Nilsson of Glen Campbell. Wonderful tune. |
