Sounds like a loving relationship between two depressed people, one of whom has realized that no matter how much you love someone, it's up to them to save themselves. Beautiful, but sad. |

I believe the first verse parallels sex with governmental control:
'I let you put it in my mouth' - parepin in the water, done with the people's knowledge and consent.
'I let it get under my skin' - nero chip, also consensual (I think).
'I let you pump it through my veins' - Prozira, a drug made by a (fictional) pharm company for 'situational anxiety'.
'I let you take me from within' - the people, the majority, let the powerful few take control of them, body and mind.
Later on, I think it goes from the legal drugs to Opal, and the way it seems to open the minds of the people who take it. Just an overview of the last verse, I just wanted to bring up the way sex can be related to other kinds of control. |

Interesting, Coil sometimes remind me of David Lynch. Oh rose, thou art sick - sometimes, love/lust can make you ill with the fire of it. I love Coil. |

I'm no fan of Jakalope, but when I gave It Dreams a fair listen, this song stuck out (possibly because Katie doesn't sing it). Anyway, it seems to be about someone feeling they are meant to be with someone else, despite what that someone else thinks, despite their fear or disgust. The strong idea of obsession, the world falling apart in the madness of it, of the love he (for argument's sake, he) has for her. Nothing makes sense, but this. I need you, and you need me. Open up your arms and embrace us.
Again, I'm not a fan, but aside from the jab at Skinny Puppy, this one's not at all bad. |

Dear Katie,
"Reigner" is not a word, at least not in the English language.
Love,

This song really reminds me of The Collector, and old-ish movie with Terrence Stamp and Samantha Eggar. A young misfit man kidnaps a woman he's been watching, just for the pleasure of having her there. He nearly worships her at first, until she ultimately disappoints him. Good movie. This reminds me of the melancholy "love" he feels for her as he watches her. |

Ted Phelps has a real talent for bringing out the raw pain to be found in a relationship's end. Brutal and honest, with lovely and strong melodies. This is the ruin at the end of a long struggle. |

Religion, specifically organized religion, and awakening from that dream. That's all I've got for now. |

I agree that more posts should be made about Covenant. They're more analytical, though, at times, so I guess that's why VNV seem more accessible. Feeling over thought. Not that VNV are shallow by any means. This song seems at first to be the message sent by the "State", censorship, etc., saying that what they do is for our own good. At the end, the real face comes out, and the greed and suffocation becomes plain. That's what I think, anyway. |

Some parts of this song remind me of the story of a famous shipwreck in Sweden a few hundred years ago. I think it was called the Vasa. This song is a highpoint of any live Covenant show, really. It does seem to be about the pivotal moments in life, and the tenuous hold we have on it. Some of it seems more specific, though, and I'm not sure what those parts refer to. I can connect it to more than a few personal things, but I'm not sure what the writer intended. I love it, though. |

Hmm...then again, it could also be drug-related. Guide my reckless steel....maybe it's both, the complications of a relationship based solely on drugs and sex. I like the sex idea better though. |

I've always thought this was a song about sex, too. The chorus is kind of a giveaway, for me. Specifically, sub/dom sex, I think, also maybe from the point of view of the dom, in the heat of the moment, revelling in his (I assume in this case, his) control, and in the end, challenging the sub to show control of her (for argument's sake, her) own.
Fail against my domination - this could even be violent.
Learn the sweetness of my mercy
Guide my reckless steel (!)
Make me feel -
or fix my speed - that would be the challenge. Subjugate yourself, or take control. Your choice. |

Oddly, the sound of this song is very cool, in a laid-back way. There seems to be very little menace in the music itself, but at face value the lyrics seem full of menace. If the lyrics are intended to be as threatening as they seem, maybe the chilly music coupled with the words represents a guy so familiar with this sado-masochism, and with feeling used by the target of the song, that the feelings are like home to him. Like the frightening thoughts - the devils on his mind - his plans for tonight are as easy as plans to meet for coffee. You don't see a lot of this "I want to violate you" stuff from Covenant. Too bad there aren't more comments for this song, I'd love to see what other people think. |

This has to be one of my favourite Covenant songs. The world is running out of time, and we have little left to lose. Correct, this is a dystopian anthem. |
