oh and apparently, there's symbolism in the whore of babylon made out to smybolize rome and its downfall. but then again, it's not unusual for conor to take jibes at american society these days, and he's not without license i guess. i just thought it was doubly cool that he could write like this. |

i honestly think this song, and this CD, in general, is one of conor's most expressive and candid reflections compiled. i mean, on one hand, he's talking about how's he's like a " newly orphaned refugee, retracing my(his) steps", which i take to be a reference to how a lot of people considered digital ash to be a "sellout" album on his part, and how this album, while not necessarily assenting to that general view, makes point of how he's returning to his roots, how everything sounds more like his earlier ie, lifted, stuff, more. and one another level, the bit about a general state of the world, about how many people seem to be lost in the contradiction and some ignorance of the times, is real descriptive. when he speaks about how people build the "school of meditation... to soften the times And hold us at the center while the spiral unwinds", and how "The Bible's blind, the Torah's deaf, the Qu'ran's mute If you burn them all together you get close to the truth still They are pouring over sanskrit on the ivy league moons While shadows lengthen in the sun", he really reveals contradictory actions that we see so much of today (dubya). the allusions to yeats' writing is so necessary, and the whore of babylon part, i thought was brilliant. apparently the whore of babylon was an antichrist figure that bastardized the kings of civilisation by sleepingwith them all, casting them all in sin. i took the part in the song to mean that there is so much backward movement and lack of hindsight that contributes to the regression of society today that not even she can sustain so much badness. i also took the refrains' lyrics as a direct notice to the liberties that are taken in the name of religion. namely, satan is blamed for the bad, and when great satan's gone, the blame is placed instead on someone else. that part is iffy, ok.... but i doubt anyone could deny the same message pronounced in "And it's the sum of man Slouching towards Bethlehem" ok, anyway, that's my two cents. sorry if i'm not very eloquent. or structured. i just really enjoyed this album, and thought i should say something to tout it a little bit, so my part to show appreciation. |

i think this song has to do with falling in to the imagined golden life of being an artist, then sees what it is for real; that life is a hard one to get by on, unless you really are living for the art. i think teh guys are saying that there is no sort of respect for teh fakers that do it for the fame. that music is decaying under these types of people. because the agent could care les if you hchew off your face, and if tyou don't love your music to do it, no one else will care more than you do. |
