Pompeii – Numbers Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is beautiful. It obviously has to do with someone dealing with an eating disorder; perhaps from the personal experiences of one of the band members or a friend. I find this song very interesting because eating disorders are an issue not commonly addressed in songwriting but are very widespread. Therefore, I applaud Pompeii for approaching a frontier on often thread upon. It seems like the songwriter is reflecting upon the confrontational experiences of themself with their friend who has the problem, possibly a significant other. Either way it is someone who is close to the songwriter because the lines "'it's just a diet, i've kept it quiet. Even if you told all my family and
friends they would never believe it.'
I think you're right. I can't believe it too
that it's you, but it's you."
They are just as shocked as anyone else would be to find find out this information. It also seems like the person with the problem is trying to push the songwriter away when they say "I weighed out every option, that scale's not fit for advice" and the following lines "Medical language won't ever help to shape this if that mind is just as frail
as it's frame.
you know i'd leave it alone"
I believe beyond the personal level of the song that it is also a critique of the modern culture which is so enveloped in pop culture which is run by people flooding the minds of everyone with fashion advertisements that uphold an "ideal" bodily image which can end up being unhealthy to maintain.
It is a meloncholy song. But one with a postive message of awareness. Not to mention the lyrical writing is ingenious.
