For me, this about falling for someone then finding out they are taken, but you still hang out with them, play pool, trying to deal with being so close to someone so unattainable. The line "too bad you had to have a better half" sounds like she found out about the girlfriend AFTER she had already fallen for him. She doesn't want to talk about her feelings, but she can't think of anything to say to him, so she keeps him at a distance to make the situation bearable. |

Except that the Potomac is the river running through Washington DC, the US capital and political centre. Hardly a coincidence that she chose this river to mention. If you look at the CD booklet, the words "Political Science: The Political Process" are written alongside the lyrics. |
