Patti Smith – Pissing in a River Lyrics 16 years ago
Pissing in a river means whatever the hell you want it to mean... Patti Smith is more influenced by poetry than most artists. "Pissing in a river, watching it rise/ Tattoo fingers shy away from me." To me, it means something foul done and quickly washed/carried away. A similar line to this interpretation would be: "My bowels are empty, excreting your soul." Another way to read it could be it's just a more punk way of saying "cry me a river," in that so much proverbial piss has happened in the relationship that's its drowned them.

Defiance, Ohio – Old Dead Tree Lyrics 16 years ago
A decent answer to the Irish folk classic "Dirty Old Town": "I'm gonna make me a big sharp axe/Shining steel tempered in the fire/I'll chop you down like an old dead tree." Probably meant to be a homage to The Pogues. The bit about Slayer in the beginning seems unwelcome to me--albums aren't forms of Twitter and Slayer still sucks. Besides, aren't two homages in one song enough?

Bikini Kill – Alien She Lyrics 16 years ago
I think we can read multiple things into it, however, I tend to agree with Dejavula and snowcountrychild, in that it's not about the inner struggle of the individual, but the "inner" struggle of society. To me this is a clash between second wave feminism and the emerging (at the time) third wave... called "lipstick" feminism by it's detractors. I get this feeling mainly from: "I want to kill her/ But I'm afraid it might kill me." Once you start othering women, even a patriarchal woman, you are to some extent destroying the sisterhood inherent within the feminist movement. At least that's my take on it.

Kasabian – Shoot the Runner Lyrics 19 years ago
Hah, yeah I think drunken sex has something to do with it. Absinthe is said to be an alcoholic aphrodisiac. Does anyone else think it's chain instead of Chang?

I've see the last full verse interpreted as:

"There's,
There's no cover in here,
Having sex in the snow,
All things gone with the past,
Lose your taste like the rest."

Instead of...

"Kings
Kings may come and then go
By this sword you must know
That all things will come and then pass
Live your days like the last"

I think I like the second interpretation better.
