Train – Hey, Soul Sister Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think so. There are very obvious 80's music references as previous posters have pointed out. The lyrics in the bridge tell you what the song is about "the way you can cut a rug, watching you's the only drug I need." "Cut a rug" is old slang for dancing. Which makes sense since he keeps mentioning 80's songs and music groups. I'm inclined to think the singer is watching a girl dance (possibly to these 80's songs). He's obviously infatuated with her and enjoying what he's seeing. Maybe they even hooked up that night or maybe he just fantasized about her but, clearly the 80's references are laced through out the lyrics for a reason.

Robots in Disguise – La Nuit Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, guys good job on the translation but I think it's:
"I breathe in the sweet smell of the city" (doux can mean sweet or soft, but since we're talking smell, it's got to be sweet.)

"F---ing white Mercedes"

"Murder/kill one of those tunes" an "air" is a common term for a tune or a melody.

I'm American but French is my first language, my family has a French background.

At first I thought they were saying "L'ennui" in some places too, LOL.

Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually, I think the heartbeat and the floating, airy feel of the melody do suggest exactly what the video shows...a fetus...the begining of life. The lyrics in that context make perfect sense to me. The first two verses of the song are told from the point of view of the fetus:

The "black flowers blossom" is very good imagery. If you've ever dropped ink in a bowl of water it spreads and seems to "blossom", suspended in the water. From the fetus' point of view, blood entering the womb would seem to blossom that way, since the baby is surrounded by amniotic fluid. I think the lyrics are "fearless" NOT feathers. The video shows a baby in the womb and the floating matter is cells. They may have used bits of feathers for the effect but it makes no sense why you'd have feathers in your womb! Please, look up the video if you haven't seen it.

The last verse "water is my eye" could be the fetus but to me it seems to be tears shed for the abortion. Even if you're for abortion it's still not something you'd brag about...it would take the form of a "confession" if talked about.

Shiny Toy Guns – You Are The One Lyrics 18 years ago
Orange, you have an interesting take on this song...I have to agree with the religious undertones. But I have a slightly different interpretation. I see it as two people making out and the girl wants to have sex but the guy is resisting. Maybe even spouting off all the reasons why they shouldn't.

They're kissing and making out and he's thinking about his faith. The girl is growing impatient and frustrated (you so believe your own [religious?] lies, [but] on my skin your fingers runaway) and the guy is worried that he's going to give in and (don't try to say you won't try to crawl inside my head) and sleep with her. apparently she's very convincing.

The "can't steal what paid for" may be a religious reference. Maybe he's rationalizing that it's ok to sleep with her even though it might be a sin. Afterall, Jesus died for his sins so he could get into heaven. So in a sense she can't steal his salvation, it's already paid for. I've heard many Christians speak in terms of Jesus "paying for their sins" in full, so that's not too far fetched of an interpretation.

This song could mean something else too but having listened to the entire album I can't help but wonder if "Rainy Monday" is connected to this scenario. He has a line about "going too far" and she's left this feeling "deep inside". So it sounds like they had sex but she's gone away and forgotten him. Which brings me to "Don't Cry out". "I can't forget what you've fogotten". I wonder if these three songs are refering to the same person? I know that the songs are sung by either the male, female or both but what counts is who WROTE the song. And as far as I know Chad & Jeremy are the writers, not Carah.

Shiny Toy Guns – We Are Pilots Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually just because Carah sings the song doesn't mean it has anything to do with her....afterall, she DIDN'T WRITE it.

I'm not so sure it has to do with homosexuality. This song could be about wanting to be a rock musician and making those dreams come true even when you come from a staunchly religious home that maybe forbids that kind of music. It's about being supressed, depressed and then being true to who you are in the end. It could simply be about manic depression.

I know it may sound far fetched but if you consider these lyrics alongside "You are the One", you'll see that there are religous themes in these songs and while some are about sex, they are also about trying to resolve the inner struggle between "good and evil". I think we're jumping to conclusions to assume this song is about coming out. This train of thought could just be a sign of the times...gay is on everyone's minds these days.

Shiny Toy Guns – Le Disko Lyrics 18 years ago
I just thought of a possible explaination for

"We're the dreams you're believing
Crawling up the walls
Running down your face"

Since it is a club scene, it could simply refer to the shadows the sexy girls are casting on the walls and on the men's faces as the dance together. Makes for great imagery. Moving shadows do seem to "crawl" on a wall:-)

Shiny Toy Guns – (Putting On The) Ritz Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of my favorite Irving Berlin songs. Fred Astaire among many others have sung it. It was popular through out 1930's. There was a remake of it by Paco in the 1980's. It's a classic!

Shiny Toy Guns – Le Disko Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, on youtube is a "yahoo interview" with the band where they mention this song is about a club they used to go to. This song talks about the attitude of the girls at this particular club. So it could be about lesbians or it could be about girls who tease guys but aren't interested in going home with them.

I'm going with the lesbian theory if the (NEW) video is to be believed. There are 2 videos for this song, the older video does feature an apple, a rose and what looks like a run down garden of Eden, with Carah as the main subject. In the old video, the men are still killed off in the end. The newer video features a club scene where an androgenous club goer is revealed to be a boy after having flirted with a few girls there. In the end this female creature with tentacles comes to life and kills off all the men in the club, including our androgenous main character.

I believe the line about "on your backs with loaded guns" is a reference to masturbation. A guy laying on his back in bed with his "loaded" male member in his hand. I also think the "razor sharp, razor clean, weopon's sensation" are references to the feeling you get during masturbation or at the point of orgasm.

I have to agree with everyone who thinks this whole first part of the song is about the fantasy most guys have of two women together. It's clearly illustrated in the new video.

Whoever said that "spock rocker" and "dirty eyes" refered to eyeliner and a certain style/haircyut is absolutely correct. If you don't think so, just google spock rock. It's a reference to a certain "Emo" style....which is the style of Shiny Toy Guns. This phrase in the song sounds condescending which makes sense...the song is written in the point of view of those snobby lesbians at the club. So I don't see drug references...the song seems pretty obvious and the video actually goes along with the lyrics. It's not always the case...sometimes a video is meant to just look cool and not have much to do with the lyrics, but in this case they match.

Shiny Toy Guns – Jackie Will Save Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually, I'm not quite sure if it is about Jackie and JFK....I'm thinking it's about JFK jr and his wife Carolyn (and her sister). JFK jr died in a plane crash in summer of 1999, just 5yrs after his mother.

The lyrics about "static" and a "grey mistake" make sense because the cause of jr's plane crash was a result of the grey haze that made it difficult to distinguish the horizon from the water. He thought he was turning the plane around but instead went crashing down to "earth"...(actually it was water).

The lyrics about "new machines" and being "crazy" also make sense when you consider JFK jr was not an experienced pilot and had not finished his certification for using the plane's instruments. Since he had NEVER flown at night or even without an instructor before, many thought he was crazy taking such a risk.

If you take all that into account, the song could be about Jackie's ghost coming back to save her son from this plane crash. "you can stop them, where's your baby? He's alone. Kennedy ,your Kennedy"

I think that last line about "you're slipping american suger sweetness 1963" could just be a statement about the end of an era. 1963 being the year of JFK's assisination, was also the begining of a downward spiral for America. Soon after Johnson finished his term, the Nixon/Watergate scandal took place. We haven't been the same ever since....no more Camelot!

Evanescence – Lose Control Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about temptation, the temptation of cheating. But if you pay attention to the lyrics you realize that the whole song is a contemplation...in the end we still don't know if she actually goes through with the affair or not. The whole song is a bunch of "IF'S" and she makes it clear that if she does do it, it would be just this once. I think the "lamb" in question is a serial cheater, he's come on to her, not even remembering her name but she's tempted all the same. She says "Can we play the game YOUR way?" which suggests the affair is actually HIS idea. Only a player would come on to a girl and not even get her name right! It's not the first time for him but she's not sure if she want's to go on being a good girl.

She's been so good and wonders what it would be like to just let go of reason, morals etc and give in.
The last line..." If I cut you down to a thing I can use
I fear there will be nothing good left of you" she may be talking to herself there. Referring to her body in third person "a thing I can use". I say this because we already know the guy wants her to sleep with him, SHE'S the good person being tempted here. So what good could be left of the guy when he's already on the shady side. If it is a reference to him then it could mean that if she gives in this one time she's gonna use him up, and leave him so sexually exhausted there'll be nothing left.

Keane – Is It Any Wonder? Lyrics 19 years ago
If you really pay attention to the lyrics you can see that it's NOT about a relationship. This song is about disillusionment and as an idealist I can relate. He was raised to believe in his government, religion, love, goodness but now he sees the world for what it is and he feels he was fed a bunch of crap. The Churches are empty, there's no more faith, love has no meaning in the world it's just a lyric on a page. So he's thinking maybe he was wrong to believe in "good" when there is so much misery. He feels like he's from another time, he doesn't fit in with the way the world is right now. Even though he's not sure how to reconcile the dissonance between the way he imagined the world to be verses the way the world actually is, he is willing to try. But he still can't help felling tired, confused and afraid of what's out there.

White Town – Your Woman Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought this song was about a straight guy who's lesbian girlfriend just left him for another woman. When he says "I could never be your woman" or "You're such a charming handsome man" I always thought he was being sarcastic. I see it as he's pissed off that she didn't figure out she was gay sooner and he feels kind of "played".

Sophie B. Hawkins – Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is actually a true story for Sophie B. She had a good friend who was straight that she fell for and this friend was trapped in an abusive relationship. It's all self explanatory...I think I read in an interview that the girl's name is Sarah but I could be wrong on that. Gay or straight I think we've all been there....stuck in the role of "shoulder to cry on" while the object of your affection goes on and on about how unhappy they are in their current situation. And you're sitting there thinking "Dump them and go out with ME, already!"
The line about "I am everything. Tonight I'll be your mother" is an example of how she could take care of this woman the way a mother would care for a child. Tuck her in at night, undo all the pain athat this man caused her friend and she would be her guardian. But it's clear the mother thing is only figurative...she'd make sure they had a passionate relationship if only the straight girl would give her a chance "I'll do such things to ease your pain, free your mind and you won't feel ashamed".
One of my favorite lines of the song is part of the ad lib fade...you hear her say "I'm feeling like a school boy, too shy and too young." That's such a great line...she has nothing but admiration for this woman but she's so unattainable Sophie feels like it's some "school boy" case of unrequited love.

Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about a girl who has money, she has everything but she's feeling numb and bored inside (I want something else to get me through this semi-charmed kind of life). She uses sex to get drugs from the singer so she'll have a little excitement in her life (she's got her own motivation she comes round and she goes down on me). I wonder if she's not the same girl referenced in "Losing a Whole Year"? Eventually he tires of being used and finds new reasons to be high on life (I believe in the sand beneath my toes...I believe in the faith that grows, and the four right chords that can make you cry etc...) he wishes he could go back to that moment in time when she said she wanted something else (drugs) to get through life. That was the moment that changed everything, it was the moment they both started on this self destructive, empty path. I think sometimes he wishes he could go back and NOT do the drugs and the other half of the time he remembers how much fun it was in the begining...how could harmless fun turn into something so harsh and addictive? That's the message this song ends with. The lyrics come full circle with the last round of "I want something else to get me through this life" being about wanting something OTHER than drugs to get through. Very cleverly put together!
