Again, this song is in reference to the relationship Ann had With Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys in the late 60's early 70's and makes refernce to the relationship that Dennis had with Charles Manson. ( see my comment on Magic man). Ann's lyrics of "we might still have time, we might still get by" is in reference to her relationship with Dennis after his ties to Manson were revealed after the Tate-LaBianca Murders, in which Dennis Wilson's character was defamed as a result... His carrer was never the same and he sank into a drug/Alcohol state of depression. The reference to the "kids keep coming" does not reference her having kids... it is in reference to the fact that even after Manson was jailed, that the run-away kids kept coming out to support Manson. Dennis Wilson was so distraught after Manson's conviction, he became a recluse, and feared for his life because Charlie had thought the people he was killing ( tate-LaBianca) were indeed the home of a record producer who had declined to sign Charlie to a recording contract. Ann was trying to stay in love with Dennis, but he, as Ann penned in this song was "so affraid of someone who's so affraid of you" ( referring to Manson), that she could not take it... Through his fear that Manson would have him killed...He went Crazy... Dennis Wilson was the one who initially told Charlie he was not tallented enough to get a recording contract... So in turn she wrote this song as an angry reply, that she was indeed going crazy... She lost her love because of demons Dennis had in his head after Manson was convicted. This was her reply of him going crazy, so- to-speak, on her... So... she was going crazy because of him.... |

One thing I failed to mention inmy message above was that Dennis' nickname for Manson was"the Wizard", also coincedental of Ann's Magic Man, but again her affair was with Dennis, and not Charlie, although she and Nancy did know Charlie... |

I have done extensive research about this song... And contrary to the belief of some, this song is not directly about Charles Manson. It is however about Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, who was briefly friends with manson back in the late 60's. Where it connects to Ann Wilson is that she had an affair with Dennis Wilson after Manson had been jailed for the tate-Labianca murders. As you know Dennis wilson was the drummer for the Beach Boys, hence Ann's reference to his "magic hands", Ann's mother warned her to come back home to Seatle ( she had been in LA working on getting a recording contract). She wanted her to come home because she was worried about the people she was running with in California. Dennis Wilson was known for his affairs with younger woman. At the time, Ann was 19, and Dennis was in his late 20, early 30's... The reference to Charles Manson is close, not direct.
This is a great song, and it definitely makes you wonder how involved Dennis Wilson was with Manson... |

I always thought this song was talking about making pictures out of clouds in the summer Blue sky. And the comparison of before you know what you want, it's gone, just like the image of the cloud you thought looked like a dog, or Butterfly.... The part where she talk about finding the old mans sectret place, is where he went to get high... and when she caught him, all she could say was " see the Dog and butterfly..." she was referring to him having to get high to get what he needed... |

In reference to Teufel's comment, Steve WAS NOT still alive when this song was written... Take it from me, a guitar player of 27 years, and a HUGE DL fan, Steve was dead and gone when this song was written. The last DL song Steve recorded on Adrenalize was "Have you ever needed someone so Bad?" The album stalled almost a year after Steve died... this song was added to the album after Phil Collen wrote it for "steamin Steve"... Miss him... he was unbelievable, but he couldn't handle fame... He also never thought of himself as a great guitar player... boy what a wasted talent... |

This song is all about conquerring a woman.. oral, anal, and vaginally... the metaphors indicate that their status as rock stars afforded them the right to get these women in compromising situations, and they poked-fun, no pun intended, that they could do what ever they wanted to these women... |

This is all About heroin... the sludge factory is a metaphor referring to Layne's body... and the portrayal of his loss of creative spirit as the recluse he became when he was full-blown... i.e. the reference to the picture on the milk carton, as if he were missing already... |

You guys are all way-off on the meaning of this song... This song is about the immeasurable heights the human mind can reach when altered... chemically altered ( drugs, alcohol), and how the secret to creativity is also gained if you respect the high... if you go too far, you end-up in a sea of sarrow, or addicted, thus stiffling the creativeness... i.e... Layne's addictions as seen through Jerry's view-point... |

All of the metaphors in this song about sex, are really intended to show how Jerry Cantrell feels about being born and dying...Buried in the womb represents the chance of birth, i.e, life, and "sand rains down, and here I sit, represent the death part of life... the story here is to get all you can in-between... all the life that is, because life is not guaranteed... |

Again, this song deals with Layne's demons with substance abuse... mainly heroin and alcohol... Sadly their music was filled with these same themes... I guess that helped the dark side of their music reach so many listeners... I wish he would have gotten help.. I Miss AIC... |

This song is talking of Layne's fight with addition to heroin... All of the change metaphors in the song are depicting his struggle to leave the people around him to get clean... Brush away lose ground in reference to digging his grave a little more each time he "rides the Horse" ( shoots-up) |
