Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics 18 years ago
Wait, wait, wait.

"We see it on the floor".

WHAT do they see on the floor? I am terrified about this.

Stone Temple Pilots – Meat Plow Lyrics 19 years ago
This really reminds me of George Orwell's 1984.

1. "They got these pictures of everything to break us down... They make us hate and we make it bleed" -- could very well be a reference to the Two Minutes Hate, during which citizens were made to watch videos to inspire a hatred towards the state's enemies.

2. "I got a lover and she shows me how to understand" -- a reference to Julia, Winston's forbidden lover. She is a thought-criminal like Winston.

3. "I got a brother and he shows me how to make amends" -- Big Brother uses the Two Minutes Hate to drain the citizens of feeling by forcing them to use up so much emotion during this exercise. This could very well be construed as "making amends" with the state.

I'm not totally convinced that this is what STP had in mind writing the song, but I think the parallels are pretty interesting.
