Belated addition. Wonderful song which was only introduced fully to me when I heard the Johnny Cash version. Somehow the simplicity of Cash's delivery matches the poignancy of what the song represents to me - an older man trying to teach a younger version of himself some of life's truths. This came on Cash's last album before his death which makes it so much more relevant and in many ways sad. |

| Bonnie Tyler – Holding Out For A Hero Lyrics

The lyrics speak for themselves, the music speaks for itself. Both a lot, lot cleverer than you'd think.
More cheesy than a ploughmans lunch but absolutely wonderful. For B5 fans (you know who you are) watch the fan video featuring this as the soundtrack. |

| The Strawbs – The Flower and the Young Man Lyrics

Dave Cousins who wrote the lyrics insists this is a song about a doomed love affair. Well, who am I to disagree BUT my interpretation has always been somewhat different. I have always believed this is a song about narcotic addiction a theme covered by Dave Cousins in songs like 'Hero and Heroine'.
The flower in the song has always represented the opium poppy which entrances and beguiles the 'young man' to the detriment of all other things in his life until the young man's addiction results in his death. All that remains is the flower waiting for its next devotee.
Whatever, the song is hauntingly beautiful. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Carnival Is Over Lyrics

The song was written by Tom Springfield and was originally sung by Judith Durham in the 60's group The Seekers. The Seekers were originally from Australia, like Nick Cave and maybe this is Nick's tribute to his fellow antipodeans.
The song is definitely about things ending and is extensively sung in Australia when public events finish (it was due to have closed the Sydney Olympics until Judith Durham broke her hip and couldn't perform). A bit of a national institution like 'Waltzing Mathilda' but a very moving song none the less. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Loom of the Land Lyrics

A wonderful song indeed.
As you say a loom is an apparatus that weaves things - usually a tapestry. A tapestry is in some ways like a painting on cloth and is very contoured and tactile due to the weaving mechanism. What Nick is alluding to is the landscape in which 'he' and Sally are walking in being like a tapestry. Hard to describe in a few words but I hope that helps. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Knockin' On Joe Lyrics

Nobody commenting on this? I am surprised. Nick Cave doing the blues in his own inimitable style with a bare set of musicians pulling together for an atmospheric tour de force. In its own way it is the Mercy Seat with a bluesy feel. A man is preparing for his own execution and he is walking to his death with the other inmates supporting him (the slang term for this being 'Knockin on Joe' hence the songs title).
This is undoutably a strong song on a strong album. Atmosphere, lyrics, emotion and impecible musicianship - in other words classic Cave. |

| Electric Light Orchestra – Mr. Blue Sky Lyrics

Well I certainly learned something reading through this page. "Songmeanings" is my preferred lyrics page because it gives people a chance to interpret and not just read the lyrics. Having said that I really didn't expect much comment on this ELO masterpiece. I had always assumed it was just a happy go lucky song about the joys of summer. The comments about it being about the birth of a child certainly has a lot of creedence and I sure as hell wouldn't argue.
Nevertheless, it is maybe the best "lift you up" song and I defy anyone not to feel better after hearing it. Oh, and for those who don't know. It and other ELO was used extensively in the Dr Who episode "Love and Monsters" and anyone who likes ELO should check it out.
Finally I didn't know the final line was "Please turn me over" - I always thought it was "Mr Blue Sky" but listening again I realise I was mistaken. It sure is interesting what you can learn on this page. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Loverman Lyrics

Oh come on. Paedophilia and child molestation - I think not. Demonic love, demonic hate and lust, far better fill the words and the performance of the song. Listen to the song and not just the lyrics, it is about rage and a man (or demon) who feels he has been stripped of what is rightfully is (R is for render unto me baby, M is for that which is MINE) The whole thing just creeps with an ancient malevolence including whispered echoes of the main lyrics (demon talking in many voices). The scope of the narrative (seeing empires fall etc.) is far beyond the imagination and deviations of the human kind. |
