I think it's important to note that two nights passed in this song. "The first hour of morning light Warmed by the flame inside," Is the first morning. Nothing bad has happened yet. Which makes sense, because you don't have to man a lighthouse 24/7. For the new-years night he would have just topped it up enough to last the night and then gone out. So it's not his night-out that causes havoc, it's what makes him indisposed the NEXT night. It's when he's beaten by the girls husband that morning that shit hits the fan. He's unconscious for that day AND that night, which is the night the White Pearl crashes because he hasn't been able to get up and refill the oil. |

To me this song seems to be sung about lust without love. He's in a relationship, but the other partner seems not to care for anything besides lust and sex. And he's asking them to tell him, do they love him or not? "I've already seen a true romance, and it don't look like that" Obviously states that he doesn't feel that what they're doing is considered romantic or having anything to do with love. "Promise refusal" To me says that the other person can't promise him something, obviously to love him. "Does it distract you? Pillar of flesh" Erm, I'll let you decide what the pillar of flesh is. |
