i always hear the part after Mr. Chips "to reconstruct the song of your bones" it makes sense because the song of your bones could mean your "true calling" or what it is in life that's most important...and when you hear it, will you recognize it? will you take action on it? or will you just give up and let this huge thing take over that you're a part of but didn't ever want to be. kinda like huge corporations |

everyone else has good ideas about the meaning of this one...but another way to see it os that the mother has Alzheimer's and is slowly forgetting everything. she talks about random things (like teh snakes at the creek bed, which could have happened years ago) and the son is just talking to her. this could also be why it seems really disjointed in places...people with the disease remember things really randomly. the son seems to be trying to reassure her that he's ok.
the main reason i say it could be alzheimer's is because my grandmother had it, and it sounds a lot like a dialogue my dad and her would have...not really making sense, her still trying to take care of him, and him reassuring her. this song really gets to me, any way it's interpreted. very beautiful |

when i first heard this song and read the lyrics, i also made a connection between this and neon genesis evangelion...i thought i was the only one! and my grandmother died around the same time this CD came out, so it has a lot of meaning for me |
