I agree about that line "you may have won my hand dear, but it was the consolation prize". It sounds like HE wasn't HER first choice, or at least he thought he wasn't.

The Police – Friends Lyrics 18 years ago
I suppose the lyrics could be taken metaphorically, but I believe it is quite simply a song about a person who kills and eats people, making it a gruesome, darkly humorous and quite unique song.

They Might Be Giants – Climbing the Walls Lyrics 18 years ago
The Narrator got fed up wasting his life with is pointless, meaningless job so he quits. Like most people who hate their jobs, they think it'd be great to be able to just do nothing. But now he realizes that not having a job and doing nothing can drive you absolutely crazy, which is what is happening to him. His "new job" is "staying at home going crazy", metaphorically speaking.
The "Too much junk..." verse refers to him being so bored that he starts cleaning the house (as some people tend to do) to keep him busy...like you just flip out and go damn we don't need this, and this and that, what are we doing with all this junk? Basically he becomes obsessive/compulsive to deal with his boredom/craziness.
The "Deep end..." verse refers of course to the narrator going "off the deep end". Where some people talk about going crazy, he really is, he knows first hand what it's like now.

Barenaked Ladies – Take It Back Lyrics 19 years ago
I definitely think this is about our world post 9/11.

"It's hard enough to stomach
But try to look away
Is this a news report or a trailer for a motion picture?"

These acts of terrorism, the planes crashing into the twin towers, are shown repeatedly on tv...it makes us sick yet we keep watching. It's almost surreal, like some overblown movie trailer rather than real life.

"Long lines and warning signs
Think of all the lives saved by plastic knives
It's naive, but make believe
We will never lose if we remove our shoes"

This verse talks about all the security checkpoints now in places - museums, theme parks, and mostly airports. Sort of a tongue in cheek/sarcastic verse - do we really think taking off our shoes through security, banning certain objects, allowing only "plastic knives" will really save us? Well the points is, it may not but perhaps it gives us a false sense of security.

"Save me from a villanous imagination" to me refers to the sick thoughts and ideas of the terrorists.

Barenaked Ladies – Maybe You're Right Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is about an abusive relationship from the point of a friend of that couple.
All of their friends knew something was wrong but it was always ignored or excuses were made. They bought all the lies they were told by this couple (obviously the guy won't admit to doing anything and the woman is usually too scared or ashamed to admit anything either).
Finally this friend can't hide his feelings anymore and confronts them, or goes to the police...basically makes what he knows is happening public. This results in the couple breaking up, maybe the guy going to jail. Many times when this happens in an abusive relationship, the woman feels it is her fault, or is so brainwashed that there is nothing wrong that she is distraught over the relationship ending.
The singer's friends think he shouldn't have done anything, saying that he should've left everything alone, everything was fine.
This drives him crazy and he can't understand how no one can see the crime being committed.

I like the political angle as well though.

Barenaked Ladies – Maybe Katie Lyrics 19 years ago
On one hand, this person is being told to take it slow and if you aren't totally into this chick, don't get involved.
On the other hand, he is being told to jump right in. Tell her you'll love her forever. He's told tons of women that he loves them but he doesn't.

Like a little angel and devil on this guy's shoulder.

I've seen this live though and nope, no banter between them in the performances I've been to.

Barenaked Ladies – Vanishing Lyrics 19 years ago
A great song by Kevin Hearn. This can be taken literally or metaphorically.

Literally, the song is about a Las Vegas magician who falls in love with a woman in the audience. Of course, she must go back home, leaving him with the thought of her forever. He never gets to express his feelings to her.

Metaphorically this is about a guy who usually has control over his relationships. He can make women fall for him through his charisma (he's the magician) and perhaps even money ("Isn't that a necklace he found behind your ear" could represent his buying of gifts for women). . But he falls for this one woman, and now she's the one that controls the relationship. She leaves him just as he's done to many a woman before.

Barenaked Ladies – You Will Be Waiting Lyrics 19 years ago
A sad song about a couple that is breaking up. She can't stand certain things about him and needs to be on her own, find her own identity. She is angry and "burning him in effigy" (although it seems that she doesn't admit that she's doing so).
He can't stand the fighting but can't imagine them acutally breaking up. In the chorus he clings to the hope that she will always be there in the end. And in the end, he is begging her not to leave.

I think you could take a pessimistic view on this song, but from the way it sounds to me, I choose the optimistic view.

For those of you who know the BNL song 'Break Your Heart', he considers himself a coward for never getting out of the relationship when he know he should have and then finally gets the courage to leave at the end and is very happy.

In this case, instead of leaving, he realizes that despite the problems in the relationship, he cannot turn his back on this woman. He's already where he wants to be. He is already home. Then when they are old, he wonders if she'll ever realize how close he was to leaving.

Great song. I agree 100% with what has been mentioned here already. It can be taken literally as a humorous song about a failed robbery attempt, or as a teriffic metaphor for a failed relationship.

Barenaked Ladies – I Can I Will I Do Lyrics 19 years ago
This is some sort of messed up relationship.

He is leaving her, he knows if he doesn't know he'll have to eventually ("a break is just around the bend"). Why is he leaving? You could infer that maybe he is having an affair with this woman. Any other ideas?
He truly does love her, or at least thinks he does. However he knows that she doesn't think he does.
One day, he says, he will prove to her how much he does love her and always will.

I also like the line "but guilt still makes me refrain" - to me it has a double meaning - he feels guilty about being with her and reading the letters that she writes to him and that guilt is making him stop or "refrain"- but also "refrain" can refer to the chorus of song which is exactly what that line leads into.

Barenaked Ladies – Maybe Not Lyrics 19 years ago
This guy feels that his relationship is doomed (whether it true or just insecurity we can't be sure)...he knows that soon she will realize that he is no good for her and they will be break up. He will be the enemy, held at a distance. Her optimism (the glass half filled) will be diminished (spilled).

In the chorus he mentions the things he's done wrong (forgetting things like her birthday perhaps, all their fights) and offers some hope that maybe he'll be forgiven for those things, maybe they will be forgotten, maybe they can continue in their relationship and sharing everything - but that hope quickly fades ("but maybe not")
