I totally see the literal meaning having something to do with the Challenger or Columbia shuttle accidents especially in the stanza: yes you are my love the astronaut crashing in the name of science just my luck they sent your upper half it’s a very nice reminder |

I think this song is more along the lines of two people that normally don't like each other but have a physical attraction. They're just in it for the sex. It seems like the girl, at first, tried to get with the guy but then they try or something and she realizes its not working anymore... "if i only we could ride far enough i'd forget you altogether" She seems like she wants to stop. She just wants to run away. She used to want to stay and try to get them together so they won't have to go behind people's backs. "don't ask me what i came here for it is too delicate for words i used to want to make you talk now i would rather you did not" This part makes it sound like the girl is ashamed of what she and the guy do. When she says not to ask why she came she means that she doesn't quite understand herself. She can't tell if they are actually doing it for love or for lust. Also the very first line "I won't try to explain what I cannot understand" makes me think that she isn't certain of herself. |

This song reminds me of Romeo and Juliet. How Juliet says she loves Romeo because she truly loves Romeo while Romeo only says he loves Juliet because he thinks she hot. "You only see in black and white So go on back to your own kind And I'll go back to mine" I think that its Juliet admitting to herself that Romeo only sees two sides in life, the beautiful and the ugly and that, because she knows that he doesn't truly love her, he should just stop wasting her time and love and go back to his family. "and i loved you unprotected but you only love in red" Refers to Juliet loving Romeo and knowing the consequences and knowing that she is, most likely, going to get hurt no matter what but she is willing to take the little bit of doubt even though she knows that Romeo only sees in red as in he's only feeling lust. "and i love you like no other but i know youre not the one..." Juliet loves Romeo and knows that she will never love anyone like she loved him but she knows that they don't feel the same thing for each other and that they can't be together. I love this song so much! |

I think this is the POV of Cinderella in the original, gruesome story. The whole "it's a gory sort of story, it's been told a hundred times before" part, to me is saying that its been told so many times that no one actually remembers anymore and that while other people may think its just a wonderful love story Cinderella has to go through it everytime someone rereads it or retells it. Its like a REALLY long game of telephone. "and how much time do we have left before it's midnight and you see that i was never the right size?" Cinderella (or whoever) is tired of everyone coming to the conclusion that just because her foot fits the shoe that the Prince and her are automatically made for each other. |

The Lizzie Borden explaination is one that I picked up right away. I think that was one idea especially in the line that follows. "its not really so bad, there’s still mom there’s still damage to do before they wrest the axe from my hands" I also got the impression of an insane asylum in this line. "no sharp corners or glass no small objects or plastic bags please, these are death to a delicate girl" It got me thinking because you aren't allowed to wear belts or sharp objects or anything that can be used as weapons in asylums for fear that the patient will hurt themself or someone else. |
