This is definitely an indredibly amazing song that's even better live. I'm really ashamed that I didn't like it at first when I got the cd. The part about valium is kind of related to What You Meant which talks about how people should resist taking pills just to feel alive. It's a bit contradictory, or maybe just to me, but either way it's quite interesting. The line about Camille, Lee Miller and Gala is about the muses of these famous painters (I can't remember any of their names right now but I think Rodin was one of them). It's saying "will you still be my muse and will I still love you a long tiem from now?" But "Love'll die and lovers fade but you still remain there" is reassuring him that everything will be alright. Another part about reassurance is the chorus which talks about saying "it's bright on the outside" so "you dont feel so weak about being such a freak". By telling yourself that it's better being where you are, you dont have to feel as bad about not being one of the "beautiful people" Anyone have an explanation for "squeezing in your fingers what it means for me to be" because the only one I can think of is kinda dirty. |

I think it's better than Tell Her Tonight too. They've got some really great b-sides that deserve to be on an album. I realllly want to read The Master and Margarita, partly because I read The Stranger and that helped me understand the Interpol song, Evil a lot better. |

They recorded it and put it on vinyl for the fanclub, you can join up here: http://www.franzferdinand.co.uk/fanclub/ But anyway the song seems to be a bit about masochism (the bed i'm tied within, come on let's fight let's feel alive) and being with someone you dont like and who doesnt like you. This is especially obvious in the part about "you're the mother growing cold". In this relationship, both people dont care for each other much and "the only feeling I've kept towards you that resembles any passion" is hatred (or sex if youre pervy). I think it's a really interesting song, and just shows the broadness of Alex's and Nick's lyrics. Best band ever. |

I used to think that it was definitely about a guy who broke up with his girlfriend and misses her, but really enjoys missing her. Kind of like the upside of depression, as in it really sucks, but it's also kind of enjoyable for him. Then a while ago, I really saw it more of Alex and Eleanor and the long distance relationship kind of thing. Although I think it's written more broadly than that, as echoed in the line "I flirt with every flighty thing that falls my way" I don't think Alex is actually replacing Eleanor in real life, it's just that way in the song. "So come on home but dont forget to leave" is about enjoying the freedom you get from an open relationship like that. I'm not really saying anything that hasnt been said before, but I felt like posting and Franz Ferdinand is definitely the best band ever |
