it doesn't matter exactly what his inspiration was. i'm sure that drugs played a part, since he took various drugs at the time. it would be very unusual for a dylan song to have a simple "meaning" however - i don't think any of his songs can ever be completely explained by one single idea. what's important is not that dylan experienced drugs, love etc etc. we've all experienced these things - the difference is that dylan had the ability to write about it. i've always found the most impressive thing about his writing the way that he can use commonplace language to describe totally otherworldly ideas - like "the foggy ruins of time" - a perfect example of the way he combines perfectly ordinary words to make the most beautiful lines, although their precise meaning is tantalisingly difficult to define - that's what makes them so magical. clearly he is describing being in a strange, beautiful mental state, but whether or not that is due to one or another drug is totally irrelevant to the beauty of the words |

as already mentioned, this song was about his wife, Sara Lowndes. In fact, the rather strange title is actually a derivation of her name: SAd eyed lady of the LOWlaNDs I find it particularly moving to listen to this song, knowing that when he wrote it he had no idea that ten years later he would be writing the tragic corrollary "Sara" on the Desire album. This song is so rich with imagery, but the images are so unpredictable it always sounds new and fresh, compared to the hackneyed lyrics we always hear in other love songs. "mercury mouth" "voice like chimes" and many more. Also, I love his vocal performance in this song - he may not be a conventional singer, but no one else could cover this song and sound as in love as he does - he sounds as though he's having sex with the words! |
