it might very well be about being bipolar, but i don't think that there's proof in the lines "your friends all sing along and they love you." i just don't see it as the character having delusions of grandeur and thinking that their friends worship them or anything like that. it's simply about how friends don't understand depression, and they only seem to "sing along" when you're having a good day. the rest of the time they back away because they don't know what to do or they're just too self-centered to care..."fair weather friends," as they say. |

the "hippie," or whatever you want to call it generation, was pretty fucked up too but they managed to make beautiful music about it. it was all about trying to find something through music or drugs or motion, something vaguely defined that they knew they were missing. maybe something more meaningful to our generation could be like a search for originality when everything seems to have been done before again and again. it could be about how the mass media is everywhere and makes us into different categories of people instead of individuals. the theme of the internet and brand names could still work, if it actually said something meaningful instead of just listing things.
this song sounds like something an adult would write trying to appeal to "kids today" by spouting off crap they think we can relate to. |

i don't think the "really fucking on" part means that she's necessarily bipolar. she doesn't sound unnaturally happy, or like she's being "exuberant, impulsive, and grandiose". everyone has great days sometimes, but they do feel fucking cheap when you're only pretending to be happy the rest of the time. |

So many songs have described our parents' generation beautifully. Maybe our generation really sucks, but I think we can do better than "rapping" a laundry list of brand names and buzzwords from the news.
Hot Topic is not punk rock, and MC Lars is not The Who. |

I don't think the ending is optimistic. I see it as saying she knows she's going to get through her depression because she has before, but at the same time knowing that it will happen again and again...so "the good feels so fucking cheap." |
