Fuel – Shimmer Lyrics 19 years ago
meisentones has a point in looking at the meaning of the title. The song could also just be titled 'Love', because the 'Shimmer' is about the glow of love, how good it makes you feel, and most of us know that love at a good place can feel better than anything in the world:

"She calls me from the cold
Just when I was low, feeling short of stable
And all that she intends
And all she keeps inside isn't on the label
She says she's ashamed
Can she take me for awhile
Can I be a friend, we'll forget the past
Or maybe I'm not able
And I break at the bend"

The ex-girlfriend calls him at a time when she feels lonely - symbolically "out in the cold" and feeling a lack of comfort in her life - and she does so at a time when the singer (the artist or person singing and associating with the lyrics) is feeling weak. He knows she has an agenda, and she is playing her cards close to her chest - but she is apologizing for what happened, wants to forget the past, so they can be a part of each other's life again... at least for awhile. All this pondering about her and the past pushes down on him, especially since he is at a weak point emotionally - but because he still cares about her, he lets her back into his life...

"We're here and now, will we ever be again
'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
Away again"

They are living in the moment, without any expectations for the future, like she wants - but he wonders if it will grow into anything more serious, like they thought at one point in the past. He feels the glow of love, and the comfort of having her in his life (and most likely also in his bed), but his experience has taught him that the good times - the emotional high of a new or reborn love - never lasts...

"She dreams a champagne dream
Strawberry surprise, pink linen on white paper
Lavender and cream
Fields of butterflies, reality escapes her
She says that love is for fools that fall behind,
And I'm somewhere between
Never really know
A killer from a savior
'Til I break at the bend"

This girl has ambitions. She wants champagne, sweet fruit, smooth and rich cream, and all the wonderful things in life that she dreams about. She doesn't want to get tied down in a serious relationship, with marriage, a home and children, because it would just keep her from what she really wants in life - it may be good enough for some people, but not for her. He's not quite as cynical about love in the way that she is, but he is also no longer a hopeless romantic - he still feels love, and gets wrapped up in the shimmer of it all, because he still has problems telling the difference between good and bad people in his love life. In the end, it's when he buckles under the emotional pressure that he finds out...

So the girl has come back, and he has let her back in his life. He can see that when it comes to life and love, they have different perspective, but yet he still finds himself wondering if they will ever develop the type of relationship that he really desires. Perhaps it's all the wondering, or his desire for something more meaningful from her, but he finally realizes what their relationship is to him:

"It's too far away for me to hold
Too far away..."

"Guess I'll let it go...."

It's not what he wants. He does love her, but she is too emotionally distant from him in this relationship of convenience. He wants something more involved, with greater expectation and love, so he can hold it close to him and feel the comfort of its warmth. The final line finishes it all, with him resigning himself that he has to let what they have go...

Radiohead – I Might Be Wrong Lyrics 19 years ago
I must say that this too is one of my favorite Radiohead songs. I came on here to finally make sense of the lyrics, and the ones at the top are incorrect as of this comment. After looking up the lyrics on other sites and finding that they also couldn't figure out the other undecipherable lyrics at the end, I decided to pull out the head phones, and listened until I came up with something that seems to make sense...
---------
I might be wrong
I might be wrong
I could've sworn I saw a light
coming on

I used to think
I used to think
There was no future left at all
I used to think

Open up, begin again
Let's go down the waterfall
Think about the good times and never look back
Never look back

What would I do?
What would I do?
If I did not have you?

Open up and let me in
Let's go down the waterfall
Have ourselves a good time, it's nothing at all
it's nothing at all
Nothing at all

Cry and then begin again
Cry and then begin again
---------
Not only do these last two lines seem to fit what Yorke is singing, but in the section that follows the pause in the song - my favorite part, and beginning at about 3:52 - what does Yorke do but cry out to the instrumental music? He is singing what he has preached in the song.

As for the debate whether the song is about a relationship or a higher power, does it really matter people? I mean, a person can draw strength from both religion and people that matter to them - perhaps the song is good enough to interpret is both ways - the song is about a soul-felt desire to change for a better future...

David Usher – Butterfly Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, it's a breakup song - but there is also an element of remembering and reflecting on the past and what was once there...

Where have you gone? Cause I can't feel you in my life anymore...

Beautifully stated love and loss...

Hayden – In September Lyrics 19 years ago
September is when school and university starts.

This song is about a guy who stayed together with a girl when school started, but instead of finding that they talk and call each other to let each other know that they care, the guy find that the girl is just trying to provoke his jealousy. Or at least this is how he perceived it.

He still loves her, but part of him wishes that they just broke things off before they parted...

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 19 years ago
RE: comments by behindthemusic

You are most likely right. And of course some of the lyrics echo the "it's better to have loved and lost" sentiment - it just seemed odd to me that the singer is not by the person during their last moments, while musing about love and watching someone die. But I've never been in an ICU before.

Most likely, the question "So who's going to watch you die?" refers to who, out of all the people waiting in the ICU, will be the one by your side when you pass? ...

Perhaps I just like the ironic tragedy of my original comment... :)

Breaking Benjamin – Until The End Lyrics 19 years ago
Like the majority of the other songs on this album, it's about a girl, or a past relationship. From looking at the lyrics for the entire song, I would guess that the girl was cynical, somewhat hopeless about life, but who also pumps herself up with a superiority complex:

(Verse One)
"So clever, whatever,
I'm done with these endevours -
alone I walk the winding way,
(here I stay)
It's over, no longer,
I feel it growing stronger -
I live to die another day,
until I fade away."

You think you're so smart? Fine, I'm done with you - I'm going to go on alone, and I will not give up on life while there is still breath in this body. The chorus is him commenting about her attitude towards life, and possible towards their relationship - the line "It's not enough, it never is" could either refer to her dissatisfaction with life, or his behaviour in their relationship. Perhaps it refers to both:

(Basic Chorus)
"why give up? why give in?
it's not enough, it never is -
so I will go on until the end.
We've become desolate -
it's not enough, it never is -
but I will go on until the end."

The second verse is his commentary on how he currently views her and their relationship. I got wrapped up in you, and your inability to cope with and be happy in life. I love you, and even though it's over, you still creep into my mind from time to time. But I had a feeling this was coming, so I am going to keep on living life:

(Verse Two)
"Surround me, it's easy,
to fall apart completely -
I feel you creeping up again,
(in my head)
It's over, no longer,
I feel it growing colder -
I knew this day would come to end,
so let this life begin."

Some additional lines are added after the chorus is repeated. While I was with you, I became distracted from where I am supposed to be - but I am going to keep on living. Smarten up, woman - life is difficult enough without you making it more difficult on yourself:

(Extended Chorus)
"I've lost my way, I've lost my way,
but I will go on until the end.
Living is, hard enough,
without you fucking up!"

The final repeat of the chorus also includes some additional lines, replacing the second section with his view on the future. Things were difficult between us at times, and you may think that you are better than me, or that you were the winner in the conflict between us - however, I haven't given up on life, so I win in the end!:

(Final Chorus Ending)
"The final fight I win, the final fight I win.
The final fight I win, but I will go on until the end."

Our Lady Peace – One Man Army Lyrics 19 years ago
Whatever. The anti-religion has become the new religion for so many people. Don't believe in the God or morality of this group of people who try to tell you how to see things, instead believe in science, the dollar, and yourself - what this other group tells you to believe...

It's still a belief system with assumptions about the world - just not the one that people can talk about without being accused of trying to shove something down other people's throats... you I-Want-To-Be-A-Rebel wanna be...

Mobile – See Right Through Me Lyrics 19 years ago
It's true that this song is about someone who wants to be noticed and acknowledged by someone they have a crush on. However, there is a subtle issue of pride about it all. The singer would be able to take on many things with a brave heart:

"At the wake of the storm
Many flurries of cold and furious thoughts
Hardly managed to drag me down"

and

"I may climb highest fences
Face the worthless consequences
Obscured,shattered is the sky
Another lesson learned in time"

But the object of the singer's affection makes him/her feel weak and nervous, whenever they are around, or even if they are just thinking about them while alone. This person is smitten:

"All of this can’t be real the poor state that I am in
Discomfort in my sleep may have brought me here
All the vows are broken, all the guilt I am wearin of bein here
Of being here so unprotected"

and

"Many lacks of confidence
In hidden useless conversations"

The singer has been mentally rehearsing what would happen if they had a chance to interact or get to know the object of their affection. But now that the effort is being made, he/she is going to do their best to make sure that their crush doesn't realize the full effect they have:

"I live to justify to give the reasons why
You won’t see right through me,see right through me
I live to justify to say the reason why you’ll may sense my fear
But you won’t see right through me"

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 19 years ago
Perhaps I just have a warped way of interpretting lyrics, but after reading through all 5 pages of comments, I am shocked that not one person sees what I see:

Love is watching someone die...
So who's gonna watch you die?

My take: You may have been a truth that I laid down with, but I'm out here in the waiting room, and not in there watching you die - I don't really love you.
