this song is definitely about their daughter, alabee. kevin has said so in interviews. this song (and the album) were both made and released before alabee was born. they (he and nina) are beginning their odyssey into parenthood. |

there are a lot of of montreal songs that are actually sad, though the music may be very upbeat.
i think it's about someone who could never really enjoy childhood in the way that other children could (such as a kid who grew up dealing with divorce, emotional and social problems, etc). some people grow up with perfect lives, never experiencing any strife or heartbreak. to me it seems to be about jealousy for someone who has an innoncence that they'll never know, due to what kind of childhood / life they've endured. |

this song reminds me of infatuation or just simply admiration. it's definitely a song everyone would love to have sung to them. very endearing. |

to me this seemed to be about struggling with addiction and drug use. "chemicals, don't strangle my pen" (the inability to write music and find inspiration). i especially thought this because at the last show when i talked to him he said that he is now "clean."
"nina twin [his wife] is trying to help and i really hope that she gets me straight."
i'd really like to know more about his supposed mood swings, though. i just assumed this was about drug use. |

no, kevin barnes is not gay. he is married to a woman named nina. i love this song. i think it's beautiful that he is comfortable enough with his sexuality to write such a cute (and funny) song about a good friend. |
