The song follows the George Sand's (psuedonym for Baronne Dudevant) book, "Indiana." It is the story of a woman who had made an unfortunate marriage. At the age of nineteen she had married Colonel Delmare. He's very controlling of her, and she being an obedient wife, takes the brunt of it. She finally rebels when a dashing aristrocrat woos her only to her dismay later on, he's playing her. In the book, she's protrayed as weak, but strong, and she faints and becomes ill often |
