| Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I vaguely remember seeing Twilight because it was at 3 in the morning and I was on morphine drip in the hospital,so my memory of the movie is pretty blank. Anyways, as far as my interpretation of the song goes, I'll have to break it down by each chorus. "I was a quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere" This can be interpreted literally as a young boy, pre pubescent, or it could be interpreted as political, young innocent America the beautiful U.S.A., with other countries having their eyes wide on America's "toys" (America's wealth). The cops closing the fair can resemble the crumbling of America's dreams, and the loss of America's innocence with cutting of the baby hair. I dunno, maybe I'm reading way too deeply into this, but thats the way I see it. Stealing of the map and crying out for help everywhere, anything, resembles America reaching out for help from other countries during a crises. "Have I found you Flightless bird, jealous, weeping or lost you, american mouth Big pill looming" This resembles the symbol of America, the bald eagle. We're flightless in our situation. Other countries, jealous of the U.S. We're lost. We have to take our pill (mistakes) and swallow it, like a bitter pill. "Now I'm a fat house cat Nursing my sore blunt tongue Watching the warm poison rats curl through the wide fence cracks Pissing on magazine photos Those fishing lures thrown in the cold And clean blood of Christ mountain stream" This chorus is so hauntingly beautiful to me because it means so many different things to me. All I can think of was the interpretation that somebody else first pointed out on the 1st page of this topic about how married men live longer than single men and how it's similar to how indoor housecats live longer than outdoor cats. If you're as familiar with owning indoor cats throughout the years you know as they grow older they start pissing all over the place, it's rather quite sad because it means it's nearing the end of it's life. Anyways, as it relates to the song, this house cat can be interpreted as America just settling idle and aging, looking out at the world and not being able to do a damned thing about whats going on outside. The rats are taking over. The fishing lures thrown in the cold clean blood of christ mountain stream, the blood of christ mountain stream is so pure, this is what the cat (america) has been wanting to get at it's whole life, but is never able to obtain because it's trapped inside the house. AAnyways, I might have gone rampant on that one, I could have gone on and on because I have even more opinions on what this song could mean, but it would turn into a novel. So that's it for now. |

| Other Lives – Black Tables Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Your lyrics are a bit wrong there...The first few lines supposed to be "With your body and mind RESTORED" and also corrected would be "When the life in your eyes once BLACK" not back...other than those few wrong lyrics the rest are alright. This song is about somebody coming home from the hospital after almost dying. They're coming home from the hospital with their body and mind restored after having a traumatic injury. Black tables are the cards missing, which would be that person's health. Anyways, thats my take on the song. I don't really think it has anything to do with a relationship at all, but that's just my opinion. |

| Athlete – Wires Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song can not only be about a premature baby being born and placed in a box with wires inside...it can also mean any person in the hospital. I love this song because I've been in and out of hospitals for the past 4 years for various life threatening illnesses. The box he refers to can also be a ventilator or a morphine drip machine. The wires of course can be IV's | |
| Third Eye Blind – My Time in Exile Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about a relationship gone sour. The two of them have been together for awhile but now it's getting boring for the both of them. Although they're still "together" they sleep around and don't even worry about cheating with each other anymore because the love is gone. He's getting sick of this relationship and wants to just leave permanently but yet something is holding him back from leaving even though he feels miserable about the whole relationship. | |
| Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I have a different interpretation of this song. While I do believe Josh Ritter is singing about the current war in Iraq, I also think this song may be about his girlfriend battling an illness. The line "If they can't find a way to help her they can go to hell" means, if the Dr's can't find a way to help her they can do just that, go to hell. Girl in the war means the girl is at war with an illness...."Her eyes are like chapagne, they sparkle bubble over, in the morning all you've got is rain..." means to me that her eyes are so crisp and clear and bubbly...but due to her sickness, they've lost their luster like a clear glass of champagne and now are like rain and cloudy. If you've ever seen a person's eyes when they're sick, they look like that. Just my 2 cents. |

| Sigur Rós – Hoppípolla Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The lyrics translated to english sounds a bit funny, but if you watch the music video they make perfect sense. The song is beautiful, with an equally beautiful music video. I'm majoring in gerontology (caring for the elderly) and the video for this song almost brought me to tears...seeing the elderly run around like young children again, regaining their youthful vigor and grace....absolutely beautiful. |

| Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is a wonderful song. I believe it's about a grown man recalling his childhood sweetheart. This verse "Someone caught us in the kitchen With maps, a mountain range A piggy bank" Is a verse recalling the time when the both of them were mapping out a plan to run away when they were children. You know how when you're young you want to run away sometimes? The pearly gates he mentions is probably some type of hang out that he and the girl used to hang out when they were little. A concrete gate of some sort, I'm envisioning it being in the woods near a railroad track. The pearly gates could also possibly be the place where they first made love when they were teenagers. Making love being a metaphor for "pearly gates." When he says "And angels with their great Handshakes Were always done in such a hurry" could represent drug dealers hanging out at the pearly gates doing deals (the grafitti covered cement walls). The verse about halloween is how the two used to go out and cause trouble with their faces painted black...and they got lost in the dark and he forgot about her. This verse is especially revealing: "Please, remember me Seldomly In the car behind the carnival My hand between your knees You turn from me And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful But never meant to last" They're sitting in the car after going to the carnival, his hands between her knees as they talk about the trapeze swingers..and she turns to him and says "but it's never meant to last" This was probably the night she left him. What a beautiful, haunting song about a childhood love that you grow up with....and to only have spent all those years together and then split apart. Like trapeze swingers coming together in the air and then swinging apart from each other. Thats my take on the song. |
