Elliott Smith – Good to Go Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm surprised by the lack of comments. Here's my interpretation.

To me this suggests a junkie girl appears in his (whoever, not necessarily Elliott) life and he admires her while aware of her drug use (junkie girl rode down south to your little world like a dream). She says he can do it if he wants to twice, almost taunting and persuasive (if you want to be like me). He pauses on his low self esteem and analyzes why he is considering it (wouldn't need a hero if I wasn't such a zero) before finally deciding to try it (good to go). Then the girl vanishes as quickly as she came (things she left lying around, kicked new york like a curse) and he searches for her to no avail (traced her footsteps in reverse, empty envelopes, I'm waiting for something that's not coming).

Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics 14 years ago
I wholly agree with your explanation. Actually, most of your explanations I've seen on Elliott Smith songs. I hate that everyone goes, "song is about drugs, done! next?" because there's usually a much deeper explanation. Not to say that he doesn't often write about addiction, but he's not always personifying drugs and singing to them in his songs.

I broke both my legs in a car accident earlier this month, and a friend made me a mix CD with this song on it. I almost cried when I heard it, and I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me.

Oh god this is heart wrenching and incredibly well written. It makes me think of that stupid Christmas Shoes song (not because it has anything to do with it, but because it's equally heart wrenching haha).

Sage Francis – Crack Pipes Lyrics 16 years ago
I noticed there's controversy over who this song is about. He's said it's about his uncle and other people mentioned how inherited scars he mentions the death of his dad. Well, in the song different he says "For the record my mother calls me Paul, Which was my father's middle name, but Ray Stepped in and raised me." Maybe his uncle was like a father to him, that could explain the reference in inherited scars any make slightly more sense. Anyone follow?

Brand New – Limousine Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about the death of 7-year old Katie Flynn. Hours before her death, Katie was the flower girl at her aunt's wedding, spreading petals down the aisle. As they left the wedding, they all got into a limousine and headed home. Martin Heidgen, 25, had had at least 14 drinks that night and his blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit in New York. He drove more than two miles north in the southbound lanes of the highway before colliding with the limousine containing the Flynn family. Both the driver of the limousine, Stan Rabinowitz, and Katie were killed instantly. Katie was decapitated and her mother held her remains as rescue workers helped the rest of the family out of the vehicle.

Taking Back Sunday – MakeDamnSure Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song sounds like an unhealthy relationship. "You've got this new head filled up with smoke" could mean that he is upset that his significant other has changed in some way, and he doesn't like it. Perhaps she wants space ("how close is close enough?"). As a result of the change, he feels resentment towards her, and wants to "break [her] down so badly in the worst way." And "make damn sure that [she] can't ever leave."

I liked this song until I actually stopped to think about the words.
