I like how she sings this version - like a ghost. It brings up imagery of shipwrecks and gray, yucky days on the coast. It's perfect.
Now I picture the part where she says "Pale as a pile of bones..." and "wind-battered, kocked over, the teeth BY the shoulder" I pictured this crumpled pile of bones, literally! Skull turned gently, the teeth BY the shoulder. Spooooky.
Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard "Lighthouse Museum" in there. I was driving one day and it just came to me clearly. I may still be nuts! |

I think the reason nobody's commented is because it's not at all cryptic. That's why it's an obvious favorite. It means just what it means about being patient and taking life as it comes. Trying not to panic about every little thing that comes your way. It'a about being the one holding the reigns of your life. I love it. |

I think it's about more than drinking. I think it's about knowing you're partying your life away when you should be working. In the business, you're paid to live this lifestyle and you're expected to live this kind of lifestyle, but then you're cruelly tapped on the shoulder and reminded that all this was provided to you because you have a talent and you should be selling that talent - doing something with it. You have deadlines and record contracts. I think it's about the stress that comes with knowing your rock star is fizzling out halfway across the sky. |

This is my favorite U2 song and I've been a fan for quite some time. I'm an old lady. I know a lot of fans my age dropped off around the time of the Joshua Tree, but I stuck around for this album. I did know it was about Judas and Christ, but I love that it can be interpreted as someone talking about a messed up relationship. I love the guitar solo as well - the way it's mixed always makes me feel like I'm floating underwater, which goes with all the things drowning and flowing in the last verse. I think it's their most well-crafted song and it will always be my favorite. |

I always thought it was about gay sex. I interpreted it as the singer "reminding" the person that this encounter has happened and it can't be wiped away. Yes, the taste of "evidence" being a bodily fluid. And no matter how much the person tries to deny it, it happened. It takes two to tango.
I don't really care what it's about. The song is damn sexy and I put it on a lot of times when I'm feeling particulary naughty. :) |
