Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey...anyone notice? I think shard_phoenix was banned...seeing as all of his previous posts are gone. Great. Now I have nobody to argue with. Sad, I know, but arguing with people makes this site awesome. If it was all friendliness and compliments, this site would get pretty boring pretty soon.

Anyone want to pick a fight? Politics, the state of commercialism in music, the New York Yankees?

Just kidding. But no, seriously.

My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics 19 years ago
Korean, I know you're not a philosopher or anything...but those are some good points. Be that as it may, I disagree that MCR is "bad for you". I know that you are a fan of metal, as am I. But you cannot say that Pantera or, let's say, a nu-metal band like Korn, is good for you. Their lyrics are violent in many aspects (take Pantera's classic "Walk") and their stage shows are highlighted by the surging mosh pits in front of the stage (Hate to bring this up, but a man actually DIED at a Korn show). I don't know much about what MCR is geared towards, as I don't pay much aspect to the "commercial" side of music.

U2 – I Will Follow Lyrics 19 years ago
Just to get this out there, this was the 2ND SINGLE U2 ever released. "A Day Without Me" was the first one. I learned this off of Wikipedia, which has to be the greatest site ever invented. Along with songmeanings, of course.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's my problem...

Green Day pollutes minds by...how? Name one song that tells you to slit your wrists. Name one "bad" song in terms of message. People will look and go, "Hey! Green Day are promoting retaliation against the government!" Well, so is every other damn band, from Pearl Jam to the likes of Neil Young. While PJ's and Young's lyrical abilities may be more refined than Green Day's, it goes without question that the members strongly believe in something, and enjoy playing and singing about these things that they want to. In fact, though I don't comprehend the full story yet, the story of the album American Idiot ends with Jesus of Suburbia/Jimmy realizing the bad choices they made in life, accepting them, and moving on.

Pearl Jam – World Wide Suicide Lyrics 19 years ago
Hmmm...I always viewed GNR as overrated.

Appetite for Destruction is a landmark album, but the pretentious Use Your Illusion albums have too much filler, although the highs are very high. The Spaghetti Incident and GNR Lies albums were also underwhelming, but the highs are extremely high. The lows just go too low. And Axl Rose has spent too long on the Chinese Democracy album. And I don't even know any of the new members besides Axl Rose. It's hard to compare GNR and Pearl Jam. GNR are arena rock/heavy metal, while Pearl Jam are grunge/alternative. I reckon when Pearl Jam ends their music career, they'll be revered as much as GNR are.

My Chemical Romance – Heaven Help Us Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh, come on, Im nOt OkaY.

A b-side is part of a single.

For example:
Pearl Jam releases the single "World Wide Suicide"

If you buy that single, there is one other song along with it, "Unemployable". That song is a b-side.

U2 – The Saints Are Coming Lyrics 19 years ago
Well...I have one question...how are people saying U2 sucks? First of all, U2 is a much better band than Green Day. Every album U2 released is a classic. Green Day are good, but please don't compare them to U2. I mean, U2 have been doing this for about 25 years...and are still making great music.

Guns N' Roses – My Michelle Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, well, well....

My Michelle...

Nobody really delved deep into the song...

It's a sad story about a girl (possibly a groupie) who tries looking for love, can't find it, and resorts to drug abuse and partying.

The chorus is sarcastic, since it's pretty obvious the girl would turn out this way, as her father acts in porno and her mother left her.

Hey, shard phoenix, I read some of your posts after talking on the american idiot thread, and I was surprised you seemed to hate Pearl Jam so much. I've always considered them to be very good.

I mean, Green Day, FOB, MCR, and...Pearl Jam? Huh? I just don't understand what's wrong with 'em.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey, whilw we're mindlessly brainwashing punk/pop rock fans to switch from insanely heavy metal music, how about some Cannibal Corpse and Gwar? I'm sure it will be an easy transition from pop-punk catchy choruses and melodies to the constipated-gorilla style vocals and melodies that are completely void, of well, melody. An easy transition indeed.

God. Let the guy listen to whoever the fuck he wants to listen to, ya bunch of commies.

Hey, geeks have all the fun, right?

Type O Negative – Black no. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All) Lyrics 19 years ago
Type O Negative is like the Weird Al of Goth bands...they know they ARE goth, but make fun of it at the same time...all the while churning out great music.

And the whole Kinks-stealing thing can be solved right here: Reznor stated that he loves the Kinks. MAYBE he's paying tribute to them?

Nine Inch Nails – The Hand That Feeds Lyrics 19 years ago
God...Reznor is 40 years old now...not saying he's a Rolling Stones-like geezer, but he's been past his prime. He just wants to sit down, have some fun, and maybe make some good music. It's not the concept album Downward Spiral. It's not the massive Fragile. But it's great. Why? Is there really a "weak" song? Is there really something that makes you go, "Wow! This sucks!" No. Every song is good in its own right.

And Reznor is not an epic poet here. He writes what he feels. Does that mean he has to switch it around in an odd manner or have secret messages in place? It shouldn't.

This song is great. The vocals are great. The music is great. Hell, the damn lyrics are great, in all its Bush-bashing extremities. And the meaning wasn't THAT obvious...many of you posted alternative meanings.

If it's catchy...does it suck? "Whole Lotta Love" is catchy. Does it suck? I sure hope everyone answers with a "no".

Bottom line- great song, obvious first single.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
^I doubt Green Day gives a shit about the old "selling-out" schtick. To much of the (hardcore) punk community, Green Day sold out at Dookie.

And I don't care. Who gives a shit if a band is famous? Is that not one of the goals one has whilst starting a band? What band starts and goes: "Yeah, I don't want to become famous. I want to sing under-produced songs under a crap label, and maybe score gigs here and there at a small pub". Nobody.

I actually think that American Idiot may be one of Green Day's least accessible albums. Think of the experimentation they tried out on the album. If anything, their earlier works are more "mainstream", being able to appeal to many people.

Sublime – Doin' Time Lyrics 19 years ago
^So, you're saying Nowell doesn't sing this song? Hmmm....

Whatever, this song's a lovely splash of Mary Jane, the LBC, and Nowell's (or whoever's) knack for making great songs.

Basically, the guy kills his girlfriend, right?

Their best song.

Jet – Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, when I first heard the falsetto, I was like, "What the fuck? Is the singer trying to be Mick Jagger?"

Then came the chorus. What a catchy chorus.

The song's about sex, really. (Show me yours, I'll show you mine...catching on?)

Great song.

My Morning Jacket – Gideon Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is absolutely MEZMORIZING.

I think it's about religion.

When we were young, we thought of religion as something very simple: God is good, and he created us all.

Now that we're older, we understand some flaws in the Biblical stories and become more liable to doubt them.

Basically, religion is spreading farther and farther apart as time goes by. Why? Not because of science.

But because of the Church's ways of giving us that religion.

No gay marriage.
No pre-marital sex.

The concept of hell, I believe, was made up. Yes, made up. It was made to MAKE us want to do good. It's a way of scaring us into living by the guidelines.

Think about it this way: If you do something really bad, two things are going on in your head. One, it's a human emotion to feel bad for the person or persons you affected, balanced by two, the fear of sinning. When many people sin, they realize what they did is a strike against them. But, however, you go on with your everyday lives. This may be procrastination.

Take, for example, myself. When I sin, I think: "Ehhh...I'll go to Reconciliation later and cleanse my soul". I haven't gone to Reconciliation in YEARS.

Now, just to say it, I am not anti-religious. I have my beliefs, and I keep them.

Mastodon – The Wolf Is Loose Lyrics 19 years ago
The wolf is loose.

DUH.

The main character in the story is a werewolf. There are many references to that through-out the album.

Great first single, great band, great album. Blood Mountain is not as awesome as Leviathan, but how would you follow that album up anyways? It's nice to see a metal band that can have fun, coming up with unique storylines behind their songs.

The Dandy Warhols – All The Money Or The Simple Life Honey Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, it's about the two extremes of life:

Famous and rich, but being taken advantage of.

And the simple life, living freely but with little luxuries.

Great song, great band. They do not get the recognition they should.

Stone Temple Pilots – Big Empty Lyrics 19 years ago
The song seems to be about the band itself and the struggles of constant touring.

"Her" represents the band itself.

"These conversations kill"

That line seems to be about how the members of the band were getting sick of each other and it became a chore to talk to one another.

So, in essence, the "Big Empty" is the gap between the budding personalities of the band.

I do not think it's about "backseat fucking", as that seems conspicuously shallow.

Great song, my favorite STP song ever. The loungy music rolling into the catchy chorus is a great moment in all of music.

And if you hadn't got it by now, my name is "Big-Empty". Yeah, I like this song very much.

Rage Against the Machine – Down Rodeo Lyrics 19 years ago
Fred Hampton, who is mentioned in this song, was a member of the Black Panthers. He was killed during a police raid, which is widely believed to be an assassination rather than a killing.

Rodeo is a very famous street in Los Angeles, known for its Hollywood stars and shopping centers.

Put those two together, the song is about the racism against rich black people.

"Rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun, these people ain't seen a brown skinned man since their grandparents brought one."

Obviously de la Rocha is referencing that many of the celebrities are whites, and that seeing a brown-skinned man on Rodeo would surprise them.

The last line,
"Such a quiet, peaceful death"
references Hampton's death at the hands of the police. Many people thought his death was not justified, and believe that racism was a large part of the killing.

Altogether, a very good song. de la Rocha pieces his material in a very effective way. And I probably should commend Morello on his fantastic guitar work.
