I was listening to the song “Hallelujah” By Rufus Wainwright, I think it is very beautiful and it has a lot of meaning to me so, after looking through the bible for names I decided to interpret some of these lyrics This is a song that comes from a deep place in the artists' soul and has deep meaning both spiritually and personally. I believe Rufus Wainwright is drawing a parallel between him and King David from the Bible. In The First Verse: “I've heard there was a secret chord, That David played, and it pleased the Lord” I believe it means David played his harp and it was soothing to King Saul and pleased the Lord. “It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift” The fourths, the fifths, part refers to how you play the chords in the song. The minor fall, the major lift, also refers to the songs structure, but I think it also means the ups and downs in life and love, True love can be a wonderful thing, But It is sometimes the source of pain and that’s something you have to accept, because to truly love someone is to always put their feelings before you own no matter what, Is what I think Rufus means by this Second Verse : “Your faith was strong but you needed proof, You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you, She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah” Later in David's adult life, after he became King, one night he was walking around on the roof of his palace and he saw Bath Sheba bathing ( The wife of Uriah ) across the town. She was very beautiful but his sin was he was looking at Bath Sheba as an object, he knew it was wrong, he did not want to give in but temptation “overthrew” him. David sent for Bath Sheba, they slept together, she got pregnant and David secretly had her husband killed during a battle. “She broke your throne, She cut your hair” the thing that made him better then others, the thing he was proud of. This action brought calamity upon the house of David. King David had taken a vow not to cut his hair so in a sense this event did break the throne by breaking David. Third Verse: He is talking about being alone. "I've been here before…I know this room, walked this floor, I use to live alone before I knew you." They’ve both made mistakes, They’ve both weakened and hurt each other, or when he says “I used to live alone before I knew you” he could be saying “one is alone without god” He then compares love to war. The flag that he sings about is much like that of empires showing their dominion over their conquest. He mentions that it is her flag, which means that is how she treats love. This is the first time we hear that “ love is a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.” This is because in the previous verse, she broke his heart and took away their hallelujah. In The Last Verse he sings “Maybe there’s a god above, but all I’ve ever learned from love is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you “ I think he is referring to how he “shot” at Uriah by sending him to battle while he married Bath Sheba. All he’s ever learned is how to hurt the person who hurt him. I Also think this song draws a parallel between it and the saying “it’s better to have love and lost then to have never loved at all” |

"Your A God and I am not" This person feels bad for thinking he is superior to other people and hes way to quick to judge others. He is a good person but is ignorant. look at the words closley "Never again no No never again" saying he is sorry and will never do that again He is letting this girl go because he has been a fool and selfish and now he beleives she is a god and he is not for the way he acted If anyone has ever seen the movie Bruce Al Mightly, It is much similar to that =D |

WOW....First of all there can be so many different imterepations for this song it's not even funny I agree with our.lady.of.sorrows when she says "I think this song might be about rebellion and how people always doubt you before they trust you." That is deffinatly one part of this song Also this is a very anti american song..."Cuz we point the finger Think everyone else is to blame" Meaning people are very discriminating because they look at everyone elses faults and flaws before we look at ourselfs they are simply saying "Have you ever asked me what makes me the way I am? Before you start judging me, or anyone for that matter.. Remember, you're not perfect either. Not everyone thinks the way you do. People don't have to live up to your expectations." and so on.... They are shaking their fists at American becuase they are talking about how America Effects our children in negetive ways. "we scream but never make a sound" That meaning they are trying their hardest to get their point across and be heard but no one has the patients or time to listen to them. They just they don't want to listen to a word they are saying because The government is stuck up and don't think anyone is right except themselfs. "we point but don't know which direction" falsely accusing someone without any knowledge Or proof they acually did something wrong. They don't know who did it so they are pinning the blame on someone innocent. We Are America right now. think about it |
