Incubus – Diamonds and Coal Lyrics 19 years ago
... It does sound a bit like something a boy band would pump out, if ony for the "diamonds start as coal" lyrics.

Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics 19 years ago
"Anna-Molly" is a play on "anomaly", and Brandon's lyrics within the song sound closer to the latter. If you watch the video, the girl who is presumed dead and almost killed at the mortuary is Anna-Molly, hence the name: she's an anomaly.

Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, the lyrics here are way off. The line "Feathers on my breath" should actually read "Fearless on my breath" and "Gentle imulsion" should be "Gentle, an ocean". There's a few more like "Ninght, night o fmatter" that are wrong, but I don't know the ocrrect lyrics.

Incubus – Pendulous Threads Lyrics 19 years ago
"It's to Incubus what Casino Royale was for the Bond series."

Well, I vote Brandon (if not the entire crew) to do the title song for the next film. Along with Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chriss Cornell (who did "You Know My Name") and Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis, Brandon is one of the best lyricists around.

Audioslave – Hypnotize Lyrics 19 years ago
I know there's always religious connotations to Cornell's lyrics, but this one strikes me as being one of his more or less straightforward songs. I think it's not so much about greed or capitalism, but more about a person's power to do good, especially when put alongside some of the other songs on the album (we're thinking of "What You Are", "I Am the Highway", "The Last Remaiing Light" and "Light My Way" here). I was playing the CD on shuffle today and those four songs and this one all came up together, so I think there's something of a theme running across them about a person choosing to do decent things or being forced to do them.

It's especially noticeable in these lines:
"All you got to do is share the wealth."
Which I read as choosing to do something decent ...

"But if you want to live to see the morning."
... Or you can have no choice in the matter and be forced into it.

Audioslave – Broken City Lyrics 19 years ago
Minor correction:

"Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch a millionaire crack"

Should read:

"Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch here bleed and crack"

At least, that's what it says in the lyrics that came with the disc and I'm pretty sure that's what Cornell sings (he can be a bit hard to understand sometimes, sounds like he's been yelling for an hour before singing).

Chris Cornell – You Know My Name Lyrics 19 years ago
"Probally one of the best bond tune in a long long time"

Defaintely better than Madonna's efforts with 'Die Another Day' ... but Garbage's 'The World Is Not Enough' is almost as good as this, if only for the 100-piece orchestra accompanying them.

Audioslave – Revelations Lyrics 19 years ago
Maybe it's not as complicated as that (not that that idea is complicated); maybe it's simply about someone who's egotistical enough to believe that they can make people better because they think they know better.

Got to hand it to the band, though. I only just started listening to them after looking up the artist for 'You Know My Name', the title song to the new James Bond movie, so this album is my first experience with them and yet I can relate to every single song on this album.

Audioslave – Sound of a Gun Lyrics 19 years ago
The meaning?

I think the whole gun thing is a metaphor for danger and that "sound" is the first sign of something. I know Audioslave isn't a political band, but when you read it like that, running from the first sign of danger, the song becomes something along the lines of people being afraid and in this case, it's afraid of a war or terrorism.

"This is for the daughters and sons
Of forgotten ones
Learning how to stand"

I think this has to do with the children of those who died in the war/attack, children who will never know their parents.

"This is for the innocent unknowns
Buried in the sand"

And this one's obviously about victims/casualties.

"My city playground is a battleground
Between the wrong and the right"

To me, this is more about the terrorism aspect (which is what I think the song is about); the us-versus-them mentality in the streets as opposed to battelfields of old where you could see the enemy.

"Now I’m grown and safe in my home
But some will never stop"

More on the terrorism thing; home might be safe for now, but tomorrow it might not be.

Audioslave – Show Me How to Live Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think it's so much about Christianity - the chorus defaintely seems to be - but more about how the notion of God changes to suit the needs of people.

"Let the stains remind you
You thought you made a man
You better think again
Before my role defines you"

I read this as being God might have made man, but it's man who defines what or who God is.

Chris Cornell – You Know My Name Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it ties in with what we know about Casino Royale; it's about Bond's first assignments as a double-oh agent, about how he needs to start being the man he has to be in order to get the job done:

"If you take a life, do you know what you'll give
Odds are you won't like what it is"
He's got a Licence to Kill, but when he exercises it, he's going to have to live with it.

"When the storm arrives
Would you be seen with me
By the merciless eyes of deceit"
When push comes to shove, you have to be able to face it.

"I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
Just next in line"
Even the best - the angels - are not infallible, and Bond is nothing special, simply a man with a number attached to his name.

"Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you"
You're on your own and you're going to have to deal with everything that comes your way because there's no-one else to help you, but there is someone who will take over from you if you fail.

"You can't deny the prize, it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die"
You might never achieve your goal; you're willing to kill for it, but are you willing to die for it?

"If you come inside
Things will not be the same
When you return to my eyes "
Once you start, you can never go back.

"And if you think you've won
You never saw me change
The game that we have been playing"
The game never ends, it simply keeps going with new players.

"I've seen diamonds cut through harder men
Than you yourself, but if you must pretend
You may meet your end"
Stronger and harder men have fallen in the face of a danger stronger and harder than themselves, but if you think you're invincible, it will chew you up and spit you back out.

"Try to hide your hand
Forget how to feel
(forget how to feel)"
If you do nothing else, don't give anything away: what you're planning, what you're feeling.

"Life is gone, with just a spin of the wheel
(Spin of the wheel)"
One small slip and it's game over
