This song was on grey's anatomy the other night - absolutely gorgeous. To me, this song is about a guy who is in love and wants the girl to see him as a strong person - he's "trying to be the man." Initally, the stronger person in the relationship is the girl, as she grabs the back of his hand. When you take someone's hand, you usually clasp fingers, but in this case, she's pulling him forward like a little kid. As the song progresses, the guy sways from professing his strength, to telling her not to let go, and then to reminding her that "he meant what he said when he said until his dying day." He realizes that the girl is afraid of something, but she's trying not to show it. Instead of calling her out on it, he tells her that the love they have for each other is all HE needs, instead of what "we" need. He tries to make himself look weaker for the sake of making her feel stronger. At the end, it should be "I'm grabbing at the fray for something that won't drown." This could be the realization that he's the stronger person, or possibly that he's already lost her and has to be on his own. Whatever the situation, he knows that loving her and knowing that the love existed was all he needed. |
