The Mountain Goats – Wild Sage Lyrics 15 years ago
person going insane. yes, definitely and clearly:

first verse...at the start, you think if you move or change surroundings everything will get better. after all, it's all situational, right? you're not really going crazy, you just need a change of scenery.

second verse...you think maybe if you find someone to be with (i'm reading it as a metaphorical romantic relationship or a close friendship) they will save you, right? i mean, getting away didn't work, but clearly the next relationship will "fix" you. but oops, no, wrong again.

third verse...the spiral really begins. fixation on the little things ("counting steps"), losing your balance both literally and metaphorically ("lose my footing"), you can't really see where you're going ("sun in my eyes"), and then the voices...

bridge...the moments of lucidity in the madness that only make the madness more overwhelming.

fourth verse...giving up/giving in.

"and when somebody asks if I'm ok, i don't know what to say..." the line between sanity and insanity is no longer clear to you, you are totally gone...

no, the "in metal" reference is to the old tradition of taking the shoes a child took their first step in and bronzing them for posterity.

Low – Laser Beam Lyrics 15 years ago
to me, this song is about being in a codependent relationship. the singer is emotionally addicted to someone who is a self-obsessed alcoholic, who nonetheless, needs the singer to manage the big things in their life ("lesser things are on your mind"). it's the sad loneliness of needing someone who dismisses your existence, but who would die (literally, from any number of alcohol related things) without you, and so you feel trapped yet vital at the same time.

am i the only one who takes this song to be about yet another one-night stand that in the drunken haze of the night before you'd convinced yourself was finally going to be "the one?" the song feels like the feeling of drinking instant coffee and smoking a cig alone in your apartment the next morning after they've left asying they'll call, but you know they won't, and all you can think about is how now you have to wash the sheets...

Neko Case – Hold On, Hold On Lyrics 16 years ago
from her performance stage banter in LA:

"this is another song i wrote with my good friends the Sadies. a great band from toronto, canada. and this song. i don't really write songs about myself very much 'cause why would i do that? but it's about always, uh, looking around and realizing how old you are and how...not...married you are, and how many kids you don't have and what a freak that makes you. but then you just have a few and give the world the finger"

The Mountain Goats – No Children Lyrics 16 years ago
this is one of the only decent songs since the great rift in his song making post-"all hail west texas" (the last of the Great mountain goats albums).

(and btw, the extra glenns isn't a darnielle side project so much as it is an equal collaboration between him and the brilliant frankilin bruno)

(don't get me wrong, i have ADORED the mountain goats for nearly 13 years...well, john darnielle at least, but the music's gone to crap since john vander-suck has gotten his talons into the projects, though the lyrics have remained excellent on the whole)

Liz Phair – Mesmerizing Lyrics 17 years ago
"don't you know i'm very happy?" sung with such mournfulness you know it's the opposite. how often have i said "i'm fine" and had it come out the opposite. this is so beautiful...it's someone trapped in emotional dependence on someone who's abusive, and instead of leaving, they believe that they are the nothing the abuser thinks they are...sigh...

Low – Medicine Magazines Lyrics 17 years ago
personally, i see this as dealing with being in a relationship with an addict, when you don't use. lots of their lyrics are about that sort of thing (amazing grace, laser beam, etc.) so it's not a real leap.

"how can it be that fun, when everyone around you dies so young"

The Mountain Goats – Shadow Song Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is, according to john at shows, written about and for a friend of his who died. and it's just really beautiful and sad. to me it's knowing there's nothing after this life, but desperately needing to believe there is anyway, just because it makes losing those you love a little easier...even if you realize ("but if i never get there....if i never show..." etc.) the truth that you will never see them again.

The Mountain Goats – Distant Stations Lyrics 17 years ago
i love this one. of his newer stuff, it's one of my favorites...

to me, it's about what it's like to have lived many different places, and to miss the lives you had,and the people in them. you feel lost, and not grounded in place or time, and you want those people in your life, but you don't, too, in many ways, for as many reasons as there are people. "i sang old songs from nowhere. los angeles, albuquerque. i said a small prayer for the poor and the naked and the hungry and i prayed real hard for you..." sigh.

this is actually a very very old song. he played it live a few times, once ages ago, and once about 4 years ago that i heard. you have to bring him lots of old grandad and then, and oly sometimes then, will he play it for you live.

'bainne na mo is a gamna" means "the milk of the cow is good for the calf"
