David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics 16 years ago

Autobiographical song about his previous drug addiction (as many have already stated)

The pinacle of his drug use was during the recording of Station To Station. He didn't even remember writing or recording a few songs off that album.

The next album was named Low and he was clean for that one (or in the process of getting there)

The most brilliant and telling line for me is:

Strung out in heaven's high ---- Station to Station (space theme and he was strung out)
Hitting an all-time low--------- Low (the album where he got clean)

Just my opinion -- and I'm right too - sorry :) --

I love reading other people's take on songs cuz it can give you new perspectives. But please people quit posting things like "so, erm, he's saying that Space Oddity was about heroin?" This is another song and it only uses that song as metaphor.

Cake – You Turn The Screws Lyrics 18 years ago
thinking about it again, i may be wrong on the UN angle. He may be talking about fair trade (or the lack thereof)

i don't think it is about record companies though. He wouldn't have mentioned "band". Cake lyrics are almost never straightforward.

Cake – Friend Is A Four Letter Word Lyrics 18 years ago
Obvious meaning here so I won't debate. I just wanted to point out one thing.

(if someone else mentioned this already, I apologize. I was kinda skimming the posts)

He's using a clever triple meaning with "four letter word". Two abstract, One literal.

1. "Friend" is a four letter word when used by the person to whom he is refering. It is obscene in that situation because they are not his true friend.

2. When he says "end is the only part of the word that I heard", he means "iend" making it literally a four letter word.

3. "iend" being pronounced "end" symbolizes the end of their relationship.

Cool word play if you ask me.

Cake – You Turn The Screws Lyrics 18 years ago
I can see how you guys went down the record business/commercialism road on this. But, like most Cake songs, I don't think the lyrics are that straight forward. Their songs usually use very abtract analogies to describe what their getting at. Sometimes they are so abstract that it is almost impossible to decipher a full meaning. In this case, though, I think it is reasonably clear..

Here's my take on the song...

He is talking about America and our position and actions regarding world politics.

"you tear down the bridge
flimsy as it is, it's business like
you shake my hand
you break up the band
flimsy as it is, it's open-mic punk rock"

I think the "band" is an analogy for the United Nations. Think about it. If you were using that analogy, what type of band would the UN be? Open mike punk rock fits pretty well. We support the UN as long as the consensus upholds our interests. When it doesn't, we tell them to piss off and do what we want anyway. Turning the screws so to speak.

"you twist the knife then go home to kiss your wife
a bigger better slice is what you'd like"

I do not belong to the fringe group of Americans who think that we are a meniacal, power-hungry (ok, maybe a little), evil empire. But I am not blind to the fact that we tend to think we know whats best for everyone and often works things to our own benefit.

"you think that i must be so satisfied
i stay inside, i wonder why"

Kinda like he wants to stay inside cause he can't relate to what's going on outside. I can relate.

"and the cement-mixer gets it all ready
one good turn at a time
they're pouring it slowly and steady
you're showing me where i can sign
what i can expect to find
but how can you say you'll be happy
when you turn the screws"

I am pretty lost on this verse. Going way out on a limb here. Maybe he is talking about how our quality of living is so much better than most of the world?? Pouring cement, "where I can sign"? Maybe the building and subsequent buying of a home??? Not enough info to delve a meaning really. But then again, a little mystery is always good in my opinion.

Okay, time to get off the soap box. Damn...that first step is a deusy...

Electric Light Orchestra – Mr. Blue Sky Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree, it is a happy song. but I think it is deeper than that.

I think Mr. Blue and Mr. Night are metaphors for a "good period of time and "a bad period of time" or possibly a "great leader/person" versus a very bad one. Throughout history there has been a cycle of these events/people. Wars, oppresion, etc...

"You had to hide away for so long WHERE DID WE GO WRONG?"

Mr. Blue you did it right,
But soon comes Mr. Night,
Creepin' over, now his
Hand is on your shoulder,
Never mind I'll remember you this way

I think he means that good times do not last and that although another bad period is sure to come (it is human nature) we should never forget when we had it right and strive to get back in the sun, so to speak.

Electric Light Orchestra – Livin' Thing Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought it was about drugs/suicide and how it is a shame to go out like that. I guess it was the "I'm takin a dive" and the "And you, and your sweet desire, You took me, higher and higher"

Oh well. Love...suicide. I was close, right.

Usually the worst person to ask for a song meaning is the artists themselves. They often lie or change meanings from what they were at the writing to something new. It's their song so they are entitled.
