Morrissey – It's Not Your Birthday Anymore Lyrics 16 years ago
very mean spirited song.

he basically hates sentimental bullshit, fair play to him.

Kings of Leon – Cold Desert Lyrics 16 years ago
beauitful end to the record. it evokes a desert really well. deserts are isolated and empty, hence his mood.

Bruce Springsteen – Youngstown Lyrics 16 years ago
''Once I made you rich enough
Rich enough to forget my name''

The steelworkers whose sweat and effort made the companys fortune, and its owners famous, forgot about the hard work of the people who made them big and successful when they shipped industrial output overseas.

R.E.M. – Bittersweet Me Lyrics 16 years ago
its a beautiful song, great dry vocals. hates being stuck in a certain situation. i'd guess a relationship, maybe within the band sometimes.

R.E.M. – Sing For The Submarine Lyrics 16 years ago
a retrospective look back on their career through song titles?

i still don't really get the 'submarine' bit. maybe it is the subconsious mind. our inner thoughts and fears?

Starsailor – I Don't Know Lyrics 16 years ago
Quite clear...he don't know what love is. He's all confused.

The Verve – Love Is Noise Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah if youre gonna steal, must as well do it well....

It makes me think of a man walking around the modern world (China esp) and puzzled by it all, by their addiction to money etc

Radiohead – Let Down Lyrics 17 years ago
to me, this song is about the worst apsects of british society in the modern world. nothing seems to work, everything is dirty etc etc. a feeling of let down. let down by the government, by it all. yes its depressing, but its like thom yorke wrote this in 1997 knowing that 11 years late blair's britian will have such a despondency about it.

Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 17 years ago
In these times of economic crisis, it seems to take on another meaning. 'the house of cards' is the family situation; just able to pay the crdit card bill etc.'the infrastructure collapsing is the money situation crippling the household. of course, it can also be for the relationship too, but it seems to be about someone trapped in a life they feel they have no control over. no wonder the singer wants a rest from it. he wants an escape, a temporary one though. an affair.

R.E.M. – Mr. Richards Lyrics 17 years ago
I had thought of the michael richards link too - especially the line about 'stand in front of your piano'. 'youre forgiven for a narrow lack of vision' could be about richards racist outburst. maybe its about both a perle type figure and michael richards.

R.E.M. – Man-Sized Wreath Lyrics 17 years ago
Well according to Q magazine its about the government blocking protests whilst MLKs widows was addressing a crowd. i take the first verse to mean that the state of things should have improved since the Reagan years and yet America still has a right wing regime. 'the empty gestures' are probably referring to Bush's appearance wth civil rights activists for example; he wants to be seen with them but otherwise has done nothing to try and improve the problems with poverty or racial inequality

submissions
R.E.M. – Houston Lyrics 17 years ago
yes its about hurricane katrina; the last verse perhaps suggesting that it is the memory of the disaster that has fallen by the wayside, or maybe simply the rebiuilding of new orleans itself.

R.E.M. – Living Well Is The Best Revenge Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the political meanings is far more likely. I hadn't thought of the dixie chicks type of link but it makes sense now I think of it. 'you don't even rate a footnote' has got to be directed at Bush or Cheney.

R.E.M. – Until The Day Is Done Lyrics 17 years ago
I think its about the state of america, and more accurately its foreign policy in recent years. The first verse is clearly about Iraq; 'the business first class' who are licking their wounds are perhaps the oilmen and construction companies who were intially excited about the invasion as they saw the chance to get rich. 'The countrys in ruins' is clearly Iraq too.
I take the second verse to be about the US itself; the 'easyspeak message' is the language we use knowadays (terror etc) . 'The notions of glory and bull market gain' is surely about the ridiculous idea that to many the country is doing well so long at the stock market is on the rise, completely ignoring the real problems in the economy.

Robyn – Konichiwa Bitches Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song is classic. whats it written about? who cares...it ryhmes...its got the beats...thats all that matters

U2 – The Hands That Built America Lyrics 18 years ago
Its early fall
There's a cloud in the New York skyline
Innocence dragged across a yellow line

thats about september 11th. the rest of the song isnt, its about how new york grew, and about how irish imigrants played a large role in this. the last line about sept 11th is just bringing it up to date, maybe showing how new york is defined today, whereas the rest of the song tells what made the city

Manic Street Preachers – The Love Of Richard Nixon Lyrics 18 years ago
i dont think this one is sarcastic, i think its saying that nixon did do some good things, he was a human after all. everything we hear today in connection of nixon is bad (watergate etc), but theres more to it than that. challenging the conventional wisdom maybe. maybe its the republicans who betrayed him, maybe the historians for the way his memory has been regarded.

submissions
R.E.M. – Fretless Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah i agree with the comment about it being about a relationship in trouble. maybe its written from the point of view of a thrid person observing a failing relationship; that or looking back at one that failed.

Manic Street Preachers – Fragments Lyrics 18 years ago
Two minutes silence in a century of screams

i think this line refers to our obsession in 21st century britian with holding 2 minutes silence for everything. every disaster, every bomb etc. how does the 2 minutes of silence take away all the pain and suffering, all the screams?

R.E.M. – You Lyrics 18 years ago
i think its a song about lust, only one thats drenched in dirty guitar. maybe thats symbolic - that sort of relationship. one of monsters high points in my opinion. i love the line 'i learned to disrespect the signs' - makes me think that he no longer trusts his instinct

submissions
R.E.M. – Bad Day Lyrics 18 years ago
i think the chorus is from the viewpoint of the governments - its been a bad day for us so please dont write about it. whereas when things go the way they want, the media are the first to be summoned. i know its about Bush but it could also be about blair's years.

the all men created equal line is about gay marriage.

'the other guy' can be clinton or gore; whoever the administration blames.

Manic Street Preachers – Emily Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah richeye is right....i think its amazing that the manics dont get better press for writing songs like this, whereas the kooks or whoever just write bland songs about nothing and get all the acclaim.

'replaced by charity' is the reference to diana there i reckon.

Manic Street Preachers – Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children Lyrics 18 years ago
about how we waste our freedom of speech. our governments send our troops half the way around the earth to fight for freedom yet no one in the west seems to really appreicate their freedom or understand it. instead of participating in democracy etc we use our freedom to worship fake buddhists like gere, we use our free markets to buy crap bootleg clothing, and we exercise gluttony by eating so much and becoming obese.

Editors – The Diplomat Lyrics 18 years ago
i reckon diplomat refers to a calm person, pragmatic (hence diplomatic) who loses their cool. maybe this helps them relieve the stress...so maybe they werent so diplomatic in the first place they were merely pretending to be.... who knows

shouldve been on the debut album in my view

Editors – Bullets Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree with the literal interpretation of the disease lines. its someone confronting the reality that a loved one has a (deadly?) disease, theyre wrestling with denial.

Editors – Camera Lyrics 18 years ago
Look at us through the lens of a camera,
does it remove all of our pain?

makes me think of these photographers who take pictures of a tragedy right in front of them, like the scene in blood diamond where the journalists all rush to take pictures of the car thats just been blown up.

Editors – All Sparks Lyrics 18 years ago
i think its basically about death - all sparks will burn out; everything dies in the end. nothing is forever, everything ends. morbid maybe but its true

R.E.M. – Bittersweet Me Lyrics 19 years ago
i agree with simsfreg. theres a real sense of exhaustion and desperation. "id sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this" is one of my fave REM lyrics.

R.E.M. – Undertow Lyrics 19 years ago
theres hopelessness in ther i think, a recognition that faith/religion/god is no good, and that is more alarming than comforting. at least thats my take.

James Dean Bradfield – Still A Long Way To Go Lyrics 19 years ago
i'm not sure the chorus goes like its written here, to me it sounds more like "i cant give you an A to Z".
i agree though, top song. in my mind its about sadness and depression.
