This song is just amazing! I have always loved it but after reading it the meaning is crystal clear in my mind. The beginning of this album (at least a song or two) is arguably about breaking up (many see it that way, this song helps me agree with that). [I don't need a girl don't need a friend cause my friend lonesomes unconditional] [Cause it's so perfect I'm so perfect you're so perfect you're not here] After feeling down and depressed about the break out he just goes for a cruise. The drive helps him to clear his mind. Everything is perfect no matter how crappy his car is. He loves everything. The drive is revitalizing. I couldn't get rid of a line in this song! Its pefect! [I search for comfort and I find it where I've found it many times before] - He is searching for comfort where he has found it before. So he has found comfort in driving before or going to a place....either way [Times before can be forgotten]- Time before is the time with his ex. Make sense? |

Just FYI in response to the discussion of "the Cathloc school" part of the lyrics, to fear God does not necissarily mean that you are scared of him. Not scared that he is going to stike you dead with holy thunder like some power hungery king. It means instead of "fearing" man and worrying about what other people think, you worry about what God thinks. WEBSTERS 1828 Dictionary: the fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun every thing that can offend such a holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience |

Wow! Why the bashing on the new stuff. Its more not less. Would you guys rather have no new albums? Anyways, my favorite song in the world is off Good News. THE WORLD AT LARGE! Float on is great a catchy. Ocean breaths salty is great too. The other tracks are on Good News are great in their own way too. Come on. Havent listened to the new album yet but dashboard became an INSTANT favorite. Its so great and catchy and I dont see how it could leave anyone disappointed! I could put in on repeat all day! So blissful and melodic. Great message too. I love it. Now I do love old modest mouse as well. Lonesome crowded west and moon and antarctica. Heart cooks brain, teeth like God's shoe shine, and there are too many to name are all amazing. |

This is deffinently a song about having sex for the first time and regreting it. Whether they are in a relationship or not I am not sure. My guess is they are not. Its like he walks into a party knowing that he got set up with this girl so he can lose his virginity (The reasons that I had to believe you weren't too hard to sell.), like all his friends who have told him all about sex. He is sort of pressured into it even though sex was sort of his reason for living. Saying that sex is overrated in a way. All he really wanted was to hold her and just feel her like something new. She's moving way to fast. But I dont know if this line applies to their relationship or her physically. |

This is one of my favorite songs. It paints a perfect picture. He is driving alone at night and it is pouring rain. He gets pulled over. Lights flash in his rear view mirror. You can almost see the cop walk up to the car with a flashlight on. He opens the glove compartment searching for a "legal document" or title and registration (which is what they ask for when you get pulled over). But when he opens the old glove compartment he only finds pictures he tried to forget. Pictures and/ or items that remind him of his past with his love that seemed so long ago. He was happy then. The second part of the song: there's no blame for how our love did slowly fade and now that it's gone it's like it wasn't there at all and here i rest where disappointment and regret collide lying awake at night (up all night) when i'm lying awake at night. ...makes me picture him lying in his bed all alone, not sleeping but pondering. He has his hands behind his head and the rain has stopped and it is very quiet. He is thinking of his old girlfriend and when she left and how it changed his life forever. So he wants to rename the "glove compartment" which perhaps represents his now bleek life. This song is soo great. |
