Red Wanting Blue – Audition Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm very happy with the reference to Toad the Wet Sprocket. And then Waiting for Godot, it's my assumption here that the actress (subject of his affection) had a part in that play at some point.
The Veruca one...possibly Veruca Salt, as in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory? Or The band.

I just like external references.

Mat Kearney – Where we gonna go from here Lyrics 17 years ago
You know, I think someone above me got it: it seems like it's about a daughter from a father. Eyes like my mother, talks like my brother. Heck, it could even be a niece.
Sure, he's 29, so it's probably not a personal experience. But it could be something similar.
But it's gorgeous song, no matter what it means.

Another epiphany: could this be about a divorce, and the wedding in retrospect?
I'm hearing the 700 faces and thinking the wedding guests.

Panic! at the Disco – Nine In The Afternoon Lyrics 18 years ago
I like the title.
To me, the phrase "nine in the afternoon" has to do with the fact that things are all about perspective. 'Afternoon" can imply any p.m. time, as it is after noon. And very rarely will someone call a time that is during the darkness of night 'in the afternoon.'
I just like my interpretation.

As for 'eyes the size of the moon,' it is likely to be an implication of drug influence, but couldn't one also go with it meaning that it's just wide-eyed curiosity and excitement for being with a person? You always hear about wide-eyed kids, all giddy with fascination.
Oh, well.
I like it.

Reel Big Fish – So Much for Rock and Roll Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about Gavin Rossdale.
"You rocked my world. You took my girl."
That's a musician that shares a similar love interest: Gwen Stefani.
I hear he's pretty much a dick.

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, personally, as a largely literature inspired band, I can see lots of shakespeare refs in here.

King Lear, first line. Cliffs of Dover.
Romeo and Juliet...two lovers. Dead.
First time I heard this song, I was reading The Tempest. "My sweet, untouched Miranda...." I thought about how the Shksp. character was naive to the world outside of the island, but she was not ignorant to her father Prospero's form of manipulation and power. When Ferdinand and the Royal crew arrive, it is her first interaction with other men, except for Caliban. He is a slave-like character that tries to seduce her.
I think it's definitely something where Caliban succeeds instead of Ferdinand, and then it doesn't work.
Caliban represents the id, and the monsters of the id (Forbidden Planet), all that is primal. Killing oneself, however, totally violates such a mindset, it's all about self-preservation. Alas, I've just run circles 'round myself, eh?

Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics 19 years ago
Guys, notice the way they sing this song...sort of in the style of RENT. That's how I heard it. And how people need to stop trying so hard to be different, just by changing what they know and what they wear, etc. It's not like they're posers, they just try too hard to set a void between themselves and others.
Just listen to "La Vie Boheme," and that's a very similar sound, in a way. I hate the people that imitate that musical. God hated it.
Oh, the car and the guitar: one of the characters sold his guitar to buy a car to go to Santa Fe.

Let's see....but, I do love this song, how it points things out quite bluntly. I love it. I love how emphasized the vocals are in Say Anything's stuff, and the music itself is good as well. Just...yeah.
RENT is all I've got, fused with "Popular."
Enjoy, kids.

Reel Big Fish – Give It to Me Lyrics 19 years ago
It's originally by J. Giels band. Yeah, it's pretty funny to hear this song when you're with your significant other, lol.
